Saturday, I had Phil (Reefer) and his brother Pat on board. After a slow days trolling and drifting livebaits for marlin we only had a small wahoo in the esky, so with dusk approaching we decided to use up our live yakkas drifting for macs on the Gneerings.
After several drifts without a touch and darkness closing in I tried one last cast a little closer inshore. Phil was feeding line out to get his bait away from the boat when it started to accelerate, he pushed the drag up and it went even faster, with the line rapidly diminishing on the spool I started the engine and chased after it.
It was a fair old tussle to get it to the boat and as I sank the gaff in and started to lift the old back gave a twinge, with Pat's help we dragged the log over the side and jumped clear of the snapping teeth. I think we were all a bit dumbstruck by the size of the spaniard as it lay across the deck, weighing it in two bits, as my scales only go to 25 kg, it added up to 33 kg.
Well done Phil that was a fine bit of fishing, I look forward to meeting its Grandad!
