Would this happen at 8 knots? This happened in an 8 knot, and entering a 5 knot zone on new years eve by State Emergency workers.

Odd one. You would think that at any decent speed the bow would be damaged, but it looks fine, from what you can see in the pic. If it were a really high tide, I could see that happening at low speed.

Here is the news paper article. I would imagine at least 15-20 knots. The water line at the time of the accident would have been no higher than another 1/2m.

NEW Year’s Eve got off to a dramatic start for seven people after their boat ran aground at Mariners Cove just before midnight on Wednesday.

The occupants of the vessel were State Emergency Service volunteers and friends aboard a private, 6.5-metre cabin cruiser.
They had been cruising the canals looking at Christmas lights in between fireworks displays at the foreshore where the SES members had been on duty.
Witnesses to the incident reported the boat had accelerated before hitting rocks and becoming wedged more than two metres above the water line.
“All hell let loose,” Mr Norris said.
“The driver wasn’t familiar with the area and it was so dark.
“The navigation markers are confusing at night time.”
“It was absolute mayhem,” Mr Norris said.
Injuries were sustained by all on board with one person suffering a fractured jaw and head injuries.
Four ambulances attended the scene as well as the rescue helicopter which transported two victims to Royal Perth Hospital.
Emergency services workers who attended the scene said those on board were fortunate to have escaped with their lives.
“They were very, very lucky,” Mr Norris said.
“It could have been a lot worse.”
The boat was wedged on rocks until Sunday and while it is “a bit worse for wear” Mr Norris said it could be salvaged and repaired.
Police are still investigating the accident and while speed was cited as a major cause of the crash, alcohol had been ruled out as a causal factor. The 21-year-old male driver, who is the owner of the damaged boat, is expected to be charged by police in relation to the accident and disciplined by the SES.
