I was towing at mermaid today with a 45cm dead tailor swimming perfectly. Had a massive run for around a minute before he line went slack. I was expecting the tailor to return cut behind the gills typical of a spanish strike. However the tailor came back perfectly intact but with no scales!!!

Any ideas??????

Welcome to the world of speculation. It could have been any of the above....(with the exception of a dolphin....i assume you mean the cetacean type not the mahi mahi). Fish that take their prey whole and 'gill scale' them before swallowing. Were there any slash marks in the tailor? usually (not always) with billies their will be a slash mark or bruise on the fish as well. I dont know mermaid at all, so i cant comment on the likely culprit. Others that do this that are likely to take a trolled bait are...big YT Kingfish, BIG GT's, and some of the larger Lutjanids (depending on where you are and how deep the water is). Were there any nicks or marks on the leader?

This is one of the things I love about fishing...learning how different species take their prey (bait/lures).

Were any Spanards or Spotties caught by you or any other boat. Sat on Mermaid on Australia with all the others and not a fish was boated. Had two hits, and one of my baits was set up for a sp[aniard - with wire and was cut off above the wire. very powerful fish. That was the total interest for the moring except for the two boats in front - one crewie? got sick - kept pulling these handfuls of stuff from his mouth and then throwing them at skipper? The boat in front kept up the theme by throwing cut up pillies at both of them. You can see by the story that they were not having much fishing success.:P

Undoubtedly a cobia. Same thing happened to me on Saturday morning. There have been a few caught over the past two weeks. Certainly not a billfish as the bait would have been slashed and probably not a jewfish as Mermaid is pretty deep, unless you had the tailor weighted or on a downrigger.

my guess is a billy as cobia don't run that quick and normally the bait comes in crushed. and 9 times out of 10 you hook the cobia. But thats just my opinion. But its right. LOL LOL

lol, off the diamond there had a very similar thing happen, except a bait under a balloon at anchor. Big run then saw the small black shoot under the boat with the bait in its gob. Dropped a second later, bait came back descaled and not a mark on it....
lol but those winter whiting are getting fairly vicious these days, heard they have been taking dogs? ;)
