After reading this post a while back I thought it a good time to get a couple of the guides on my rods fixed also.
I gathered up 3 rods and put them in the car yesterday to call in to the shop on the way home from work, ended up getting there late and it was closed but I had a look in the window and yep it looked like the place to take them alright.
Took some time off work this morning so that I could get them over to Scarborough. I walked in the shop and said hello to the cat spralled out on the floor when a little old fella come out from the back to greet me. I explained what I was after and he said OK but that I needed to understand something first, it was going to take aty least 3 weeks until he could get to do them. I stopped and wondered for a minute when he jumped in and said did I want to try someone else first, I said I might as I would prefer them quicker than that if I could.
He explained that he has so much new rod work that he doesn't get to do the repairs until spare time comes along, all was good by me and I thanked him for being honest. On the way out he started to get a bit cranky, stating loudly that he doesn't want this type of work and that I should work out for myself how to not damage the guides (got quite rood the little bugger).
Anyway, point of the post is to potentially save anyone else the same experience, I think he is so busy with other work on his high quality rods that he just doen't have the time to go around repairing off the shelf rods.

Darren,
If you went to John based on my response I apologise mate. He can be a cranky little cracker, and sometimes it does take a while, but he does do a good job at a reasonable price...... I guess it just depends on how badly you need the rod. Having said that, I have dropped rods off there a couple of times and got them back the next day, maybe he wasn't as busy then... it's a bit easier for me as well as he is very local.

Hey darren,
I went to pope's as well and the same cranky bugger greeted me and refused to build custom rods to my specs,he was quite rude.
No need for that,i think we should all go somewhere else like jones tackle at chermside do a good deal and job on repairs etc..
He insulted me and my two boys the bugger,he is setting a fine example to up and comeing new fishing generations.
He will never see our business again.

Sorry guys, I must have got John on his good days. I have had 3 rods custom built by John Pope and all were excellent product at the right price, plus I was happy with service. He even came out and helped attach the rods safetly to my car. Rods, guides etc have served me well. (one point though was he couldn't handle credit or debit cards so you need cash)
