Hi All,
Am building a GUSA PUR70H into a spin rod using the 27x method and here what i ended up with 8tip,8,8,8,10,12,16,20 measurements from the tip are: 115,230,370,560,790,1025,1250
Static test seem ok, does this seem about right or am i way off track?
Also could i possibly gain casting distance by going up to a #25 stripper, reel is a 3000 size?
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Chris,
Mate I don't know what the 27x technique is but I think you are way off with the measurements you have provided above. The guides are alright and I would go to a size 25 for you stripper guide but, IMHO. the measurements are way out. I have a 7' GUSA 705DHX which is similar. The measurements are;
tip to 1st 100mm
2nd -120mm
3rd - 130mm
4th - 150mm
5th

7th - 210mm
8th - 250mm
I've used the measurements on a split butt design.
Sorry for the half finished reply but the sytem kicked me out in the middle of replying.

Hi Mark,
The 27x method is 27x the face of the reel spool for the positioning of the choker guide as talked about on rodbuilding.org. the rods finished now any way guides are from the tip:
120
240
370
570
785
1010
1250
Static test should have been done a little better in hindsight but seems to cast really well in my books any way, Would definately continue to use the 27x as a starting point for guide placement.
on another note next project will be a 10'6'' 15-20lb batson surf blank i will be building into a spin rod for throwing gars and stickbaits of the rocks, could you suggest a guide recipe as a starting point for this one, what guides would you recommend that will be suitable for running 30lb braid.
Cheers,
Chris
Ya gotta love all these "systems" that pull an arbitrary figure out of the air.
27X the diameter of the reel face?
What if you have an 8" Alvey?
The key word to all these formulae is that they are a STARTING point at best.
There is no way a simple formulae can take into account the differences in blank construction let alone all the other variables such as line type & class, lure/bait mass etc.
There really is no substitute for mounting the exact reel/line combo you intend to use and doing both static tests and casting the weight you intend to fish.
A rod set up to chuck baits with mono will probably end up different from a rod set up to throw the same weight lure using braid.

Owen,
27x is only for spining reels, go read some of the posts on the above mentioned website and you will more then likely agree the way it has been arrived at is not out of thin air but is actually pretty sound. At the end of the day but your right it is still just a starting point.
My understanding of the main difference between braid and mono has more to do with guide size rather then position, correct me if im wrong.

Chris

You have to love the yanks, they have to try and turn a simple aspect into rocket science. I have tried their apparent tried and tested methods and I always come back to my own tried and tested method. Tape the guides on the blank and cast the dam thing, if you have to re position the guides as required. The yanks always seem to create more problems for beginners than they do simple methods. ::)
