I wasn’t going to put up a post but the photos may be interesting for some of our members.

Tammy and I went out to Shallow Tempest the other day and took some photos of some of the bait schools.

The photos show you how the poor bait fish are attacked from both the top and bottom at the same time.

I've often thought that the life of a bait fish must be one of the toughest around. Hope I'm not re-incarnated as one :(

Very nice, I find it hard to take photos when theres that sort of action going on. You have to pry the rod out of my hands with a crowbar. Ben

Hi Pete,
Tammy is young, Good Looking (Like Me) never been married and is keen to find a partner, but I am afraid to say that she wouldn’t even turn her eye to an “old” Bast#$%@ like you.
I am sure she will be flattered though.

Hi Mal,
Most of the fish below were “Striped Tuna” although Tammy did get that Cobia.

Hi Tassie Jr,
I have been out quite a bit lately but mostly in foul weather conditions and mostly trolling for Marlin. We have not been rewarded for our efforts though.

Catfish 55,
We were trolling “Citer Skirts”. The guy next door sells them rigged or unrigged for next to nothing and they are a great lure. We normally troll them at 12kmh with both engines running at 2000rpm. It is hard to stay awake with the sound of those sweet running four strokes.

Hi Darren,
I have never asked for them to be put into magazines although if anyone reading this is interested, please feel free to call me..

Hi Sunny, ( Benno 1)
The reels are Shimano. 2 x Tiagra 50WRLS I x TLD 30 2 speed and a Tyrnos 30 2 x Speed. The Tiagras are spooled with 24kg Nylon and the other two with 80lbs Sensor braid.

Thanks for the nice comments guys.

Excellent shots Franko, wonderful photography.

Now having got that out of the way ...

>> The photos show you how the poor bait fish are attacked from both the top and bottom at the same time.

That's a tautology Franko. Of course they are!

The only reason that the birds are getting a look in is that the predators have pinned them against the surface to make them easy to catch.

This is self-evident if you think about it;

1. Food is relatively scarce and there are no soup kitchens for fish
2. A predatory fish would only share lunch if there was something in it for them
3. When predators chase bait to the surface, the birds get a portion of their lunch
4. Fish don't share out of "nice"
5. Therefore predators only chase bait to the surface because it makes dining easier - a 2 dimensional proposition instead of 3, and therefore easier to catch
6. No self-respecting baitfish is going to go anywhere near the surface for the hell of it, because;

a. he has less avenues of escape
b. he is silhouetted from below
c. he can be seen from above
d. he now has to contend with being eaten from both above and below

7. The only reason bait is at the surface is because they are being chased from below

8. Therefore the only reason you see birds on bait is that there are predators underneath them.

As I said, a tautology.

But not to be churlish, brilliant photos!

Now get off your arse and get them published.

;D

Holy Catfish Nigel,

You have a way about you. Your description sounds a bit like business at the moment. If you don't get out and look from above, some other person will get it from below and there is nobody there to take the pictures.

I will ask around and see if there is somebody interested.

Talk about make a man jealous.....cripes;D Haven't been lurking on the saltwater boards for a while as it turns me to tears since I've sold the offshore rig. Group 1 photos as per what we have come to expect. Catch up for a bite soon mate. Been a bit pre-occupied of late.
