Hi All,
Not sure if this has been covered before but am begining to build a 7' spining rod on a PUR70H blank for throwing lures for jews and small kings etc so will be running 6-10kg braid through it and it has got me thinking as to whether single foot guides would handle the pressure, any one have any experiences in relation to this?
Also wondering what the smallest size guides anyone has found for 40lb mono to comfortablely pass through?
As always thanks for all your support and advice.
Cheers,
Chris

Chris,
Mate, personally I would go the single foot sic carbides in the Y series. Probably from a size 30, 20, 16, 10, 8, 8 and 8 with a size 8 tip. As long as you don't have any huge knots joining a leader this would be fine.
With the single leg guides you really need to do a locking wrap to prevent them fom being pulled out lenghwise. I use a locking wrap on all my single foot guides and I am yet to have one pulled out. Give me a yell if you need to know how to do one.
Regards
Mark

You will see a lot of footage on you_tube with people hooked up to some big fish using rods that you are talking about with single foot guides.

I like the Forhan locking wrap for single guides I think it finishes off the wrap much nicer and looks more balanced as well as it's added holding power.

I have looked over the article they have on the forhan locking wrap on robuilder seems fairly straight forward but wanted to make sure this the preffered locking wrap?

Yep. It is my preferred locking wrap and ties the whole thing in really tight.

YSG/LSG in Fujis will be the best bet, or the titaniums if you want to spring for them...if you are using braid as your mainline you can be a bit more aggressive stepping down from the stripper, i'd go YSG 30-16-10-8L then LSG 7-7-7-FST tip. this is assuming the 40lb mono is your leader. using a slim beauty connection i comfortably pass 70lb FC leader (bulkier knot than equivalent in mono) through 7mm guides on my barra gear
definitely use locking wrap and i'd also consider double overbinding the stripper...

ok no worries i have already ordered some guides down to 8l so will play with these and see how my knots travel and then looking at down grading.
Do you think it will be harder traveling through the smaller guides due to how the line comes off a spinning reel spool rather than a baitcaster?

if you are using Fujis new concept system as a starting point then you won't have a problem, especially given that your leader shouldn't be so long as to be on the spool, therefore the leader knot will not be spiralling as it travels through the guides
