I bought my wife a Daiwa Combo for Xmas, Daiwa 300 reel O/H and a 20 - 30 pound line recomended Rod, Heavy duty it Said, Ugly Stick It Said ,Well Wife hooked something and snagged up, so i grabbed the line by hand it came unsnagged and made a run the wife could not handle it, I took over got it to within 2 metres. Then it made its run down and the rod snapped, line went slack and FISH was gone, Snapped after the fourth runner from the butt, Talk about disapointing, I could still pull the line out by hand although the drag was quite tight, Fish was substancial , but we did not get to see it. Bought myself a Abu 6600 with thumb bar mounted to a Shakespear ugly stick for Xmas, Feels better than the daiwa. We were fishing off North Repulse Island off Conway Beach

The rod which was snapped maybe shouldn't have been in such an action. Pump and wind those larger fish.

I would take it back to the store.
I think its strange that a 20-30lb ugly stick should snap so easily.

I know they are not the greatest rods but I always thought they where pretty flexible and strong.

It could have been damaged when you bought it.

EDIT: I may be reading the post wrong, Daiwa do not make Ugly sticks?

cheers

Blank faults are a reality, 1in 500 -1000 is normal. No matter which brand.

Usually if there is a fault in the blank, you will find the wall thickness is uneven, or the backbone is on the wrong side of the guides.

Simple things like a new employee, that cut a corner to get out a job in time etc etc.

My advice would be take it back, but choose a different rod, but similar to what you need.
Reason for that is, the same rods in the same store will be from the same batch and may have the same blank fault.

Unless you are buying hand made high end custom rods, blank faults are a reality.

120 for a combo isnt going to be too sweet, especially if your wanting somthing in the 20-30lb range.

people say those starlo sticks are bang for buck, but I have never used one.

Get a Silstar crytal tip rod in the 7ft range. Will handle a absolute pounding and pull big fish. There cheap too.

maybe not a fault with the rod, you said that the drag was tight. maybe only having a couple of mtrs of line out + tight drag + pulling on the rod, something has to give. i've seen top quilty gear brake in the same way, sounds like you need to loosen the drag off a bit when you have a solid fish very close.

I took the rod and reel back to BCF, They accused me of lying , said the rod had been hit against the edge of the boat or that i had lifted the fish using the rod, He also told me he was a rod specialist and fished 5 days a week and never broken a rod, well I have been fishing (not 5 days a week) for 35 years and I have seen 3 rods break in that time, one was classed as unbreakable boat rod, The specialist told me that i could spend a $1000 on a rod and it may still break if i tried to lift the fish into the boat with the rod, I promptly told him I would not be spending my $1000 in this F$#%@&G chain of shops. I said to him surely the rod (rated upto 30 pound line) Can have 30 pound of weight against it, He started going on about angles and such, He said there were none to replace my rod and i could upgrade to another at my expense, The Add for BCF said they have everything for boating and fishing, WHAT BULLSHIT, when you want something they do not have it and are over priced compared to smaller shops, BUY YOUR GEAR FROM SOMEONE ELSE. BIAS BOATING or WHITWORTHS MARINE are much cheaper and will offer diccount, unlike BCF where you can join as a member but dont get shop discount, Bunch of WANKERS IN MACKAY BCF

As for to much drag, I could still pull the line out by hand , so i dont think the drag was the cause, It should have spooled off not break the rod only had 10KG line

In a lot of respects what the salesman sais was true, when the fish is way out at a less accute angle a rods is capable of withstanding alot more drag than when the fish is below the boat and the rod bent at right angles! Some brands of rod( eg smith ltd) give max drag settings for various angles of bend in the rod say 8kg when the rod is at 45 degrees and 5kg when the rod is bet at 90 degrees!

As to the above statement the a 30lb or 15 kg rod should be able to take 30lb of weight against it , this is in fact a popular misconception! A 30lb rod is designed for 30lb line;) and as such should be able to handle a maxload of 50% the line breaking strain eg a 30lb rod can have 15lb's of load and if the rod is really bent over to and or past the 90 degrees this should be dropped back to 10 lb;) All modern graphite and composite rods will break if high sticked ( taken to and past the 90 degrees) under load, they were not designed in this way and cannot take abuse like an old glass rod but on the up side are much much nicer to use!!!

wow coljakdak, sound pretty crappy that they would not replace the rod, bigger chains like that usually do replacements without a fuss, sounds like the guy was a bit of a tool , to say the least.

I think that they (shop/staff) handled the situation quite poorly. It is in no way the staff's call if a customer is confident he has a legit claim for warranty.Regardless of the condition the rod was presented in if the staff were in doubt of receiving a credit back from the supplier proper proceedure would have seen the customer informed that the product would be given to the rep for appraisal on his next visit, if this was unacceptable it would be up to the individual to pay freight and have the item looked at promptly. To have something replaced no questions asked would need a pattern of similar failures or a good relationship with the particular tackle shop.

Firstly I think you need to change the name of the thread, because Daiwa and Ugly Stick are two very different products in terms of quality.

It was wrong for the salesman to accuse you of lying and that would make me very angyry also, and as someone else said should have at least shown it to an ugly stcik sales rep for an opinon.

Im interested to know what size/strength line you were using and was it braid or mono.

In defence of BCF, ive taken a broken rod back once. The salesman phoned the rep, and then replaced the rod on the spot.

This is a result of when a rod is used as a lever on the side of a boat..
