I have a 15 - 24 kg solid glass overhead rod that is about 25 years old that i don't use any more.

it is way too long at 6'6", and too long between but and reel seat. very hard rod to use, and typical of old broom sticks.

I was windering if i could modify it, by shortening the length from butt to reel seat, and cutting off about 12" to try and make it into a snodger cobia stopper )ie, 37 kg + short broom stick for stopping cobes that head towards pylons and wrecks etc.

I know such a rod would be hard to hold on to, but if you are being busted off continually by big cobes heading into obstructions causing repeated bust ups, why not put on a harness and rig up a snodger rod like this???

is it worth trying to modify an old rod, or would it be easier to simply get one made with this application in mind?

cheers

Mick

Cut and try...what have you got to lose???
Do you have to move the reel seat or is it in the right place?
If it's a straight cut job you could put either a gimble on the bottom or just bung a rubber door stopper on the bottom. The choice is yours :)

the reel seat is ok. But it would probably need some of the guides to be repositioned.

I don't know anything about rod modifications, so are there any rod building gurus in the arana hills area who might to have a yarn about it over a beer?

Ok, I'm going to give it a go.

Where can I buy a quality roller tip, and some replacement guides and whatever bits and stuff I need to do the modifications?

Also, re the gimble butt, can that just come off and go back on after shortening the butt section? Ie. is the butt section of a rod generally parallel underneath the grips? Or does it change diameter as it is shortened and need a different internal diameter gimble butt?

Are there any rod building gurus on the general northside who might like to have a yarn about it over a beer?

cheers
