G'day

Who do I take the boat to to get it re engineered so they can stamp a bigger number under the max. horsepower bracket on the builders plate?

I'm sure it's possible and feasible, any leads would be appreciated

generally the boats are built to max specs

youll have to find a marine fabricator who has some sort of engineering degree to modify the boat and then sign off on it, he will not provide a new plate though, still then some insurance companys wont accept/cover it.

club marine will send someone out to have alook if its worth it to them.

only get new plates from the manufacturer and normally only at time of purchase and only ever seen it on forums for 2-3 boats and generally this was to cover the dealer putting an over weight max hp 4 stroke on the back

Been through part of this process. I was after the insurance for the boat. Went from 2 X 40 to the 2 x 100.
Stevej is basically right.

The first step is to find a boat builder who will say the boat and or mods will handle the extra HP or what is more important the weight of the extra hp.. He will right a letter to stage the boat/mods can handle the weight.

If you are putting on a new motor/s its quite simple. as the yammy guys have a policy that they have to fit it (or the approved fitter), and do a water test before the waranty is honoured. They were critical about the setup of the motors including ride hieght, if the motors were going to be sprayed with water excessively etc. I involved them before the motors were put on so I had an idea of their expectation. After all the theory between 3 parties, not me I was a bystander, they seem to think the hulls and pods would take the weight. The first time the boat was dunked into the water just off the trailer, it was failed, so back to the drawing board.

I dont know about the other makes and I dont know were you stand if you are putting on a second hand motor.

Second time we seemed to have got it right and they gave it a water test and the nod.

I sent this paperwork into the insurance after finding someone with some brain, I have it insured.

When I have stopped modifing the boat I will be going one step further to see if it is possible to get a plate for it. This I do not know yet, but my first step will be the tport dept. I have the advantage that the boat is so modifief it is called a custom boat on a custom trailer ( I went through the pain of getting a VIN for the trailer and am assuming it may be the same sort of process).

I still feel it was a little easy to get insurance so I will be making sure all is OK after the final mods.

Hope this helps a little
