I need help choosing my next boat as I've been looking for a while now but every sales guy I talk to say's there boat is the best :-/ I currently have a 32' Mustang that was bought for family use but I used it 80% for offshore fishing 20% family and need to change so looking for the likely suspects of Haines Patriot CC Outsider 625 / 685 Signiture 632f / 673f etc.

I also would like a cat but cost may get me.

My use will be:

10% long haul trips taking the family on day trips from Gold Coast to Mortern Is.
30% Fishing in the broadwater
10% Social drinks and swiming at wave break island
40% offshore fishing bottom and trolling
10% trailering up the coast for fishing trips

I think when it comes down to it I need a boat that will handle the chop and sea's very well that has family bits.

I did a similar search and ended up with the CC Outsider 685. Seemed a slightly better platform, and had a better list of features. Also did the "crossover" between fishing and family a bit better than the Haines IMO.

You'll be in the 2nd hand market if you go the 685 - not sure on price for 625.

Cheers,

Tim

Reckon I could buy 3 boats for 90K. Hold off for a while and wait for winter before you buy, you get them a whole lot cheaper then.

I would reckon that if you have 95K to spend, then you will be in a very good position when it is time to make a purchase, there will be hundreds of Boats that will fit your price and requirements.

funny thing is Noel..no matter what budget you have you cannot seem to get everything you want on the boat.

that is always the way you have 95 so that's your price point, but for just a few grand more I can have a . . . . then you start looking at the 100K range, but for just 10 more I can get . . . . it never ends huh? mind you, I would like to be in his position right now! there is a new Boat yard near me that specialises in US Boats, he set it up with a range of Boats up to a 24' Centre Console, not too sure how he will go now that the Dollar has taken a dive! but they are pretty flash Boats.

Noelm raises another point Australian or import! The imports seem to look bigger than they are they do look good. But I feel resale may hurt me, any comments PinHead!

P.s thanks for the reply's ;)

I think the days of a cheap US Boat has now gone, the Aussie dollar has seen to that, perhaps you may get a slightly better Boat for your Money, but the mucking around to complete the deal is probably not worth it now, the Dealer near me has a big centre console brand new for $65 grand,(no Motor) now add a Motor and you have a pretty good buy for a brand new rig, but then again there is a dozen Aussie made Boats that fit your decription fairly close.

try looking at the commander catamaran 6.2 offshore cat
i bought one a couple of months ago with all the extras-rigged game poles, inbuilt twin battery charger, navman colour gps and fish finder, VHF , clears and storm cover & deck wash kit , twin 90hp opti max engines , on trailer for $93,000 .
i saw at the kwana boat show that they are selling their demo boat with all the extra's listed above, 27hrs on engines for $70,000 . bargin I think.

lol..been there..done exactly that..started looking at a 24' boat..thought the price of it in a trailer at just under 140k was ridiculous...then started looking at in water boats..budget of 150k...looked around then decided twin engine would be good..plus this feature and that feature..budget? what budget? I think the brakes finally went on at around 200k..but hell it was a lot of fun.

Noelm

I sort of think 4 months is a bit quick, more like a year to really bugger us up, there will be a few more Kebbin O Sebbin cash "incentives" to tide us over for a while, then when "they" have no cash left, we may just be a tad deeper in poo than we think!

Bottom line is there are a number of suitable boats in the $80K -$100K market that cover off on the fishing and family boating requirements. Australian boats such as Seafarer, Haines Hunter, Whittley, Signature, Cruise Craft, Caribbean all have boats that fit the bill. As previously mentioned, there are plenty of comparable US built boats too.

Every person has their own unique requirements, and the final decision that you make must be to select the boat that best suits your requirements. Personally, when you are investing this much in a boat, you have to try each boat on the water, and spend some time comparing the way the hulls ride, stability, overall performance, etc. Having driven plenty, you almost get to a point where you can predict how a boat is going to ride just by looking at its hull shape out of the water.

Don't believe everything you read, because some hulls that have been previously praised as the 'be all and end all' really don't cut it. Marketing and advertising goes a long way! What you don't get to see often is how each brand builds their boats, and if at all possible, it is reassuring to take a quick trip to say the factory and check the build quality for yourself. Obviously, with US boats, this isn't all that feasible. If you get a bad feeling about a particular dealer, walk away and ring the manufacturer!

Two critical parts of the overall package are engine (brand / type / set-up /prop) and trailer (brand / roller or skids / set-up to suit hull). Getting this combination right can make all the difference. It pays to take the manufacturers recommendation with respect to engine and trailer. Engines such as Evinrude E-TEC (Direct Injection Two-Stroke), Mercury Verado (Supercharged Four-Stroke), Suzuki (EFI Four-Stroke), Honda (EFI Four-Stroke), Mercury Opti-Max (Direct Injection Two-Stroke), Yamaha (EFI Four-Stroke and Direct Injection Two-Strokes) all offer very good engines, albeit with different technology with respective positives and negatives. Rest assured, all of these brands offer solid engines with good back-up service. If you get a chance, try both a Four-Stroke and Direct Injected Two-Strokes.

When ordering (if you buy new) work out what you should get fitted when the boat is getting built (i.e. all the items that should be fitted during construction) and you can always fit other items like covers, bait boards, etc. later.

Personally, I am a firm believer in backing the Australian builders for back-up, re-sale and the fact that these brands have designed their boats for Aussie conditions. You see this carry through some of the subtle design features. Not every country has Coastal bars like we do. I think the gelcoats and glass in our local boats is first-rate, and long-lasting.
