When underbinding, should the underbind be given a coat of epoxy before binding on the runner over the top, or should the epoxy all be applied after the runner has been bound into place.
Advice appreciated.

I just make sure there is plenty of coats of filler, then bind on the guide and epoxy the whole lot as one piece, never seen them done first, then the guide and then recoated.

Naurts,
Depends what you are building. Any of the heavier game style rods or GT rods out there would benefit from a coat of epoxy over the underwrap (I use 2 coats of CP first). Then overwrap the guide feet and apply another couple of coats of epoxy over them. For lighter style rods using an underwrap, I use 2 coats of Chromaseal CP, let that dry for 12-24hours and coat the whole wrap with a couple of coats of epoxy. Sometimes I don't use any CP on the overwrap depending on the look I'm after.

You will get a lot of different ways of doing this but none are wrong.
All I have done is small rods and I have never used CP or epoxy and there is no reason why I do it this way only that it works for me.
Owen on the other hand usually puts on a coat of CP on the under binds and some times a thin lay of epoxy, he does this so that he has a smoother area to run the top threads on and they won't slip in between the bottom threads, this makes sense but I have never had that problem.
It will come down to what works with you, give them both a try and see which you prefer.

Noelm, Mark, and Sandyd,
Thanks for your advice. I have decided not to epoxy the underbinding. It is only a light surf rod. But Sandyd has hit the nail on the head. My thinking was not so much for strength but to help avoid the overbind tracking into the underbind thread. I suspect though this is more an issue of thread tension (binding too tightly causes the top layer to cut into the bottom one). On my next attempt I plan to lessen the tension.
