Cool, been thinking about heading up there one day soon, apparently they are really active after rises in dam levels because they feed on the fresh grass. Let us know how you go

Still heaps of gar active and they will stay active till at least the end of Feb. Don't know about the redclaw but there must be a lot of rich red claw trappers, because I come across dozens of abanded traps on my travels. Water has come up at least a metre.

I've seen them too Dino. Stood on a few traps wading earlier in the year. Must be a few redclaw in the place.
Cheers for the update on the water level too mate. Can't wait to hit the place on Sunday. Bass in the grass......Love it....I got a hold of the Sliders in the blue copper crawdad colour, hopefully trick a few into thinking they're little redclaw.

With the increasing water levels I am going to go out on a limb and make a prediction. This season will be same old, same old but next summer will see something of a boom. Anyone want to bet me a dollar??

Reckon you are right Shayne.
Would need long ropes on your pots at the moment as it had another good rise last night.
Cheers

well i knew that was bound to come up when i posted... thats why i stated i only take 20. the rest are released, so its not really hurting anything having a few extra pots :D

LOL You feel ok posting that on an open forum??
I believe you when you say you only take 20, but thats not the point mate. What your doing is breaking the law and its not good to promote this kind of behavior to the younger fishermen on this site witch could be swayed to believe its ok to do what you have done, or worse...
Bet stating you only take 20 won't hold up with a fisheries officer.

hmm, maybe the reason u didnt get any cos fishing karma doesnt look kindly on breaking the rules :) Or maybe its cos some other guy who also thinks its fine to use 30 pots was there the night b4 u :P

Can't get my head around why you would need 30 traps to catch 20 redclaw, can I suggest that your technique needs some improving?

i get more then 20 the first pull most of the time, there usally pretty thick where i go, i dont like sitting there in the mozzies for long periods, and i cant stant mozzie repelent, hence why the amount of pots.

Would take too long to explain all the lead up info and life cycle run downs on the dam and this species. Suggest you read earlier post.
Mind you there is a theory that we will never ever again see the boom periods experienced earlier this decade. Time will tell I guess.

When were redclaws first caught in the North pine dam??
Any idea on how they got there originally?

Im not sure where theyv gone. I went even befor this rainy period and got nothing. i thought that they might have moved up with the damn leve grazing on the grass.... I was wrong...
I havent seen any there in awhile.. maby they burried down when the dam started to get low? and havent come back out yet?
Iv found of a day time to only get a few. usally the bigger ones, but after nightfall is when they come out in there droves...

Hey guys,
excuse my ignorance being from the southern states, but is a Red Claw similar to a Yabby or a Marron?
If so, how do their eating qualities compare?
Cheers
Dave

Hey Dave, I think they are very very closely related to the Marron down that way. A lot of people love eating them, I however will only eat one if its marinated:P

We just catch them for fun, or we used to!, being a reef fisherman and spoilt for good quality seafood if we do eat them we use my old mans recipe- Boil the redclaw in a large pot with a smooth river stone, boil until the rock goes soft, throw away the redclaw and eat the rock!
Honestly they are very bland compared to a sea water shell fish

Anyone who says redclaw dont taste any good is an idiot, or a shit cook, 1st of all if u boil them, like any other crustaceon, boil in salt water. Second of all if u cut the big ones in half and spread a garlic butter paste over the meat and grill them it is delicious.

I think redclaws offer themselves best for chinese cooking either in a stirfry or one of the flavoured dishes they do so well. They are quite a bland flavour on thier own, the standard old blue yabby (Cherox Destructor) leave them for dead flavour wise. As a kid i used to catch lots of the blue yabbies in the Pine Rivers district, yet these days they seem to be very scarce to find now. Redclaw obviously dominate the blue yabbies along the North Pine River.

i find the redclaw not bad chewing.. not as good as the victorian yabbie, but if you leave the redclaw in a clean esky of water to flush them out for a few hours. then boil them, or grill halfs, there not bad at all!

Pretzil, an idiot I may be, but as you say in your post about pasting garlic all over them, is that to mask the muddy bland taste?

LOL sorry LGM:'(
I guess it just shows us that everyone has different tastes and that its ok for someone to like something someone else doesn't. I was just taken aback a little with one of the replies talking about someone being an idiot or not knowing how to cook because thy didn't like redclaw.
Cheers

Your right mate...it sure isn't everyones cup of tea. I grew up catching blue yabbies and have always thought they tasted great. What we didn't use bobbing for yellowbelly ended up curried with rice.
I gave some to my wife a few years back during a trip out home and she said they were horrible.
.....weird city girl.
She did have some of Mums battered catfish though, without knowing what it was and she wolfed it down. When she saw a catfish she gagged....as I said...weird city girl.

Whoa, ok, I apologise for insulting those without the palet to apreciate redclaw. I should not have called anyone an idiot. Is there another more applicable and nicer word for people who like to eat rocks instead of redclaw?

the muddy taste is easily taken out via a esky of town water and a few hours...

Anyone ever used redclaw as reef baits for offshore?

i think its illegal to re - release redclaw in any impoundment - can't even use part of them for bait
Pretzil
29-11-2008, 12:17 PM
Apparently its even technically illegal to release any redclaw you catch in somerset because they are not native to the area or something
