I have been looking at getting a transom mount electric motor for my 4.2 meter boat. While looking at the minn kota web site i saw they had an engine mount model wich bolts on to the cav plate of the outboard. The theory is while on the plane the minn kota sits out of the water so not to interfere with the boats performance and then while at rest you can control the speed with a hand control control while steering the boat in the normal way.

What i would like to ask is does any one use one of these and if so how do you find it. They are more expensive than a transom mount ($1250 compared to $950 for transom mount, both 55lb models with maximizer) but i guess they would be better because they are out of the way.

Will be mainly used for trolling, cast netting and a bit of lure fishing

What are your thoughts.

I would doubt you find any ppl that use these motors in aus. You might have to try an american based pro fishing site to find someone to appraise them positively or negatively.

That being said tho, there is a kayak setup from NZ that uses fixed mounted motors attached to the kayak rudders and controlled with pedals. Aparently they work very well and have a growing following.
