its probably been asked before but, i have a 90 4 stroke suzuki pushing my 5.1 platey along . it has a 14x17x3 prop on it, my question is what would happen if i change it down to a 13.5x15x3. both these and other sizes are recommended for the 90 -140 range of motors
thanks ian

Well at a guess your WOT revs would increase by about 250rpm....(lower pitch (15 inch) easier to spin, ditto slightly smaller diameter 13.5), your acceleration and hole shot will probably improve, and your top speed will probably reduce....probably a good target is to get the WOT revs to mid point of recommended rpm range.....it really all depends on what revs your current prop is gving you at wide open throttle and where that sits in the recommmended range for your motor ...look in the manual for that.

Hi Ian,
I have a 90 mercury, have just changed prop from 18 P to 14 p, it gives me a heap of grunt on pick up, which I wanted as I go off the beach, mine is a heavy fibreglass. I loose a little high speed, which doedn't worry me, I just have to watch revs as it flies straight to 6000 rpm I just keep it on 5000.
The best thing I ever did, we run three onboard.
Cheers Lew.
