View Full Version : BARRA PLASTICS (The Pammy treatment)
Hi all you Barra enthusiasts.
Over the last few weeks I've been doing a little tinkering with lures / plastics in preparation for 3 weeks of intense IBD therapy.
So what have I done .... I hear you ask>
Firstly : The Storm Wildeye Swim shad - This plastic has become a favorite but suffers from being too heavy to fish productive shallow areas effectively ....... Now we all know about cutting out some of the lead & super gluing the cut belly Now what I have done is filled the cavity with clear Silicone ...36961.... The advantage is that it keeps the lure balanced & you dont get the crappy finish that you do with glue ......... This Pammy treatment takes 13g off the 57g weight of a standard 6" Shad.
Here are the steps 36967 - 36968 - 36969 - 36970 - 36971 - 36972
The Next : The Berkley Hollow Belly - I had my first play with these plastics at Awoonga recently ..... & yes they are going to be a cracker on barra because of their action at low speed & they can be rigged several ways
Unfortunately - there is not currently available a appropriate jig head that does not require gluing to avoid pantsing ....... once again super glue stuffs the finish
So ..... I now pre rig the HB using the following procedure
Firstly push a micro screw driver into the nose of the HB ...... through to the hollow gut of the plastic ------ then I push the nozzle of a tube of clear silicone into the cavity & partially fill the belly ------- Finally I fit the selected jig head & put a little silicone over the ribbed part of the jig head prior to snuggling in the head ...... Done! 36960
The cool thing that the HB is now more robust ..... & is less likely to be pantsed + the balance / action is not effected ....... sure they are pre rigged & single use , but If they catch barra :P :) WHO CARES
Cheers all
Chris
PS ...... I've given the Jenny Craig treatment to one of the Nitro jig heads to reduce the wt of a 5/8th 7/O to allow a bigger longer shank hook ......

Hi mate a good informative post with helpfull tips for everyone.
I went to the Berkley Barra night at Logan River Marine last night and they also had some great help for those that love lake barra fishing. LRM also had 20% off most things in store, but the wallet managed to survive the encounter. The more info out about barra the more we can all improve, tinker, have fun and go fishing.
Some of pammy's treatments look pretty good!!!
Cheers Lyndon.

Yeah thanks Chris for the great tips.

Yeh Thanks Steve & Lyndon
The hollow belly mods worked for a mate a couple of nights ago on Jew ........ He was stoked with the results ........... So with some positive field testing feedback - I thought I'd share it , specially since we have a bit of a get together coming up!
Cheers

Cheers chris, this is a good mod for those heavier plastics...one thing i'll add is to not remove all the weight or too much as the plastic will not swim upright. I gave a similar style plastic a swim recently that had had a major weight reduction(80%) .....it wanted to swim on its side. I'm gonna give it a tweak with the silicone to see if that helps.
Another trick is to look at the angle of the paddle tail. Notice how the Hollowbellys paddle is almost vertical to the lateral plane of the body. This makes for a strong tail beat at low speeds while staying up in the water column. If your plastic's tail angle is more swept back then you can change it by cutting a wedge out of the underside of the tail wrist area immediately in front of the paddle (only 1/2 way thru) and re-attach by heating with flame and holding the 2 cut faces together....hey pesto, stronger tail action.
Cheers Roo.

You are right about the diet ......... 30% of the lead was what I settled on - The plastics still keeps that nice side to side roll :P
I'm still to try that Nip Tuck ........ but I will
Cheers
Chris
Try it for sure although those Storm shads don't need it, they have a huge tail area ,are pretty vertical already and are made of quite pliable plastic. the suspending storms could benefit from a tickle up tho' they seem to have a much smaller tail area and thicker wrist. also Slick rigs are ok as they are too. I've done it on some Tsunami's that had an overly thick tail wrist section...works well. also did it to some bass plastics too, improved the action a heap.

Does anyone know where you can get the liquid silicones or whatever you use to make soft plastics ....... I'd love to try a couple of things

Looks great mate, you can "weld" the belly closed with a knife heated up over a flame, finishes it off really well without glue. Time to get out and use them
Cheers Scott

No problem Steve ...... but you'd have to join the line:P

Chris Reprosil and Mikrosil are silicon casting products but are not cheap!

Chris they look absolutely awesome mate. WOW, you are a natural at these things.....I wouldn't even attempt something like that........I really hope they work....I think they will.
You better take a couple of cans of spray and the gear with you on ABT......If something works.....everyone wants a piece of the action;) ;D

Just bring along some hollowbellies ( AYU - colour) & your jig heads ........ & we can give em the treatment - The Gold or the purple / bronze interference:-*
Basically ...... we need to seal the lure up with silicone on the jig head & a little on the tail

I haven't used the hollowbellys yet.
I can see the pantsing issue, but how do they go with TT Tournament worm hooks? That was the recommendation of my local, they are SWS 4.6g SWS 6/0 heavy.
Only a week and day to go for us :-)

Not sure on the weighted worm hooks ..... I guess I'll try em over the coming weeks
Pantsing issue can be reduced with squeezing some clear silicone into the head & pre rigging ........ let it dry & away you go

I was rigging HB's on a worm hook, weedless. Not that it did me any good but the action remained and as we spent most of our time in the shallow chasing walmer water they were a permanant fixture on one of the rods.
Cheers, Pete.
