G'day,
I have a 2000 model tiller steer Honda 40HP and it has been going great guns until just recently.
Just wondering if anyone out there has had any problems with the fly wheel on their engine becoming noisy. (By that I mean the pads inside the flywheel beginning to crack off the flywheel and rub on the magneto/stator). There is a light top end whirring noise at all engine revs and I have been told that the flywheel itself may be the problem. Anyone heard of this happening?
Also on a separate note has anyone heard of certain engine oil brands causing the engine oil level to increase? Apparently by allow fuel in past the rings or something? That was a new one for me and was just wondering about it?
Cheers,
Roo.

Nope! aint herd of anythin like that happening.. certainly not a common occurence.

Not sure if that is true but you should be using 10W-30 SJ rated engine oil.. and definately not any sythetic blends. What happens is if you do a lot of low RPM running you may have glazed up the bores. this means thaey are really shinny. This will mean you can now have some fuel bypass the cylinder rings and it will actually dilute the engine oil and increase it's level.. Now the remedy is to change the engine oil and take the engine for a run flat out for 1-2hrs.. you must run it flat strap for at least 1 hour .. preferably 2 hrs. Take as much unnecessary gear out of the boat so the engine can run as hard as possible. I am serious about this but I think I would sort the flywheel issue out before running flat out.

Roo.
I have done this and it will work:)

Thanks for the info Garry.
Bit the bullet this arvo and ordered a new flywheel after having a close look at mine. The pads/contacts inside the flywheel do appear to be slightly breaking away from the flywheel in places. Under the flywheel there were very fine metal shavings on top of the engine, however there was minor (bugger all) rubbing on the stator/magneto though.
Will have to wait and see after I fit the new item whether this was the actual cause of the noise. I hope so as flywheels don't come cheap!
The engine oil level thing has still got me stumped. This engine has never used a drop or had any sort of dramas. I had the engine serviced a while back. I remember the oil level was a little high when I got it back so I'm hoping that it was just really overfilled at the service. Had the excess oil drained out today. Just have to keep a close eye on it now I suppose.
I understand what you mean about glazing the bores up. Once I get the noise issue sorted, I'll replace the oil and see what happens from there.
Cheers,
Roo.

My Honda 25 has metal shavings here and there, but I think it's from the ring gear/starter gear.

Yeah, don't worry that thought also crossed my mind as well.
Will have to wait and see. Fingers crossed.

G'day,
Just a quick follow up to a strange problem my Honda 40 developed. As previously stated the engine began making a light whirring noise at all engine revs.... (it sounded a bit like it was supercharged !).
Anyway, I was told it was the flywheel causing the drama. I forked out for a new one and yep.... it ended up being the culprit. Basically, the magnets inside the flywheel begin to break away slightly and rub slightly on the wiring blocks inside. I have included a couple of photos of the flywheel to show the magnets.
Expensive to fix but at least it's now ready for the weekend.
Cheers,
Roo.
