I was out on the Bay on Saturday when the oil light on my 2007 4/70hp Suzuki begins to flash (no beeping - also had a full, expensive service 4 weeks ago) so I go home and cancel my Sunday trip - thinking I have done major damage until I searched the past forums of Ausfish to find it is common for the servicing mechanics to fail to reset the computer for an oil change.
What has happened to mechanics/service for customers these days? Did they get a bad education at school? Did they rush through their outboard training? Does the foreman need to be riding them to double check?

I think it's the latter...

All of the above.

Did you read your manual when you got the donk? Plus the Suzi dealer is required to brief you on this & a few other things on delivery. A buyer is also required to sign an acknowledgement that he has been given this info on delivery .

I did read the manual at purchase and did note that when the 20 hour/100 hour service is due that the kill switch should be disconnected, key turned on and to pull the kill switch button 3 times within 10 seconds to neutralize the alarm.
However, there was no mention of the oil warning light requiring the same medication.
Upon ringing the dealer I am told that some carbon/excess oil may have passed across the sensor and so activated the light. What the firetruck does that mean?

I think you can only reset the service warning light when it is functioning :-/. If it was flashing when you took it in then they should have done it but if not then I don't think it is a biggie as the warning light runs of the ECM not you hour meter (if fitted).
As far the carbon/excess oil - doubt that very much ::)::)::)::)::)
If the ECM didn't trigger the light for the service indicator and they say something else triggered a low pressure oil warning it will be logged on the ecm as a fault and they should provide you with a printout each service. - Smells like a steamer to me but 8-)

If the service is done b4 the hours are up the motor can not be reset:smash:.
Most common fault in motors these days is the owners not reading their manual.

I reckon they should come with a big sticker on them explaining the flashing oil light. So many people would get caught out by this, I think it is a little confusing to have a oil pressure warning light serve a second purpose.

They do ;) - a big black n white one but maybe it wasnt put on.
I do agree though - they should have put in a seperate light with a spanner or something.
