been pulling some fittings out of my boat - rod holders, bungs, and the steering and helm station. Cut outs and bolt holes go through timber (glassed over). Kind of feels wrong for it to be unsealed. Should the timber under the fibreglass be sealed? With what? Standard oil based, primer sealer undercoat any good?

I Would be using a marine grade epoxy to seal up any timber, and use it real thin so it soaks right in to the wood. That would be my first layer on the bare timber

marine epoxy certainly is the go.
check out the "west system" web site
the two best brands are "west system" and "boat coat"
both real good stuff and designed specificlay for the purpose
Boat coat is an australian product... distributed by boatcraft pacific at loganholme.
yuo can get west system from glasscraft at hemant or carbatec at coorparoo
boat coat have a small book allabout using the stuff... costs $5 I think.
west system have a variety of small books about various things or
The holy scriptures on epoxy and boats " the gudgeon bros' on boat building"
both these epoxies are very serious products... they make the common epoxies look pretty poor............ a 1 liter kit will cost you about $40.... but it doesn not go off......and once you know what you are doing with it it is very versatile.
It has been said...... it there is something you cant fix on a boat with glass mat & epoxy I havn't seen it yet.;D
cheers
