View Full Version : Is Monduran Cursed?

After reading the trials and tribulations of some of the attendees of the recent Mondy Muster I got to thinking about the other incidents and accidents that have happened to us - and others - at Monduran (or Lake Misery as some others call it!).
In seven trips to this body of water we have:
broken two brand new rods (one to a barra and one to a trout)
lost a lure retriever overboard
broken a landing net
had a sounder failure
collided with a tree resulting in a bragmat being flung overboard (but recovered broken)
hit various underwater snags (for no damage)
gotten stuck on top of an unseen log at the far end of B and having to 'bounce' the boat off it
had a petrol leak in the boat
had a VMC treble embedded in my left thumb resulting in a trip to Bundaberg hospital
had my son fall in the boat and injure his back
lost many lures (some well above the water line!)
had 4 donut trips
lost 3 big barra to underwater timber
had 2 bouts of diahorrea while fishing resulting in uncomfortable and hurried toilet stops in the forest/jungle
gotten caught in a brief but violent thunderstormThe list goes on..........
So I'm wondering if there is some ancient local curse on the Kolan River that now affects Lake Monduran? Any comments Steve B?
We think we are fairly competent fishing people but we are starting to doubt ourselves........
I'm sure we're not the only ones that have had issues as I have seen some boats being towed, others grossly overloaded (usually by big guys!) and I have read a number of stories on Ausfish.
What's the verdict - cursed or just unlucky??:o :o :-/ :-/

Pete i dont think its cursed, most of those things have happened to me in the salt too.though i have had my share up there including hitting a stump q/b w/end resulting in a new prop needed.Maybe it has something to do with the monduran yowie...think there is a photo on the wall near the owner trebles in foxies shop.....maybe he really has cursed it...check it out next time your there..

You could be onto something there especially after the weekend I just had up there!
Yes perhaps there is something in that:::)
The old aboriginal terminology has been perhaps misinterpreted or just misspelled. When they said up S#it creek originally they may have had a word for it like a medical term of sorts that has now became Kolan. Should that in fact be Colan as in up the Colan without a paddle?
It certainly seemed that way for me at the Musta. :-/
Thankfully the reception was good value. I am sure there were a few Colans flushed Sunday Morning.

YOU CALLED ?? ....... Not too sure about this , I reckon Lake Proserpine would rate highly too , so I don't think its just a local curse

Thanks guys, I was just having a bit of fun with a ramble........
On the flip side there are many great things that have happened to me at Monduran as well (first ever barra, PB barra, watching my son land his first barra, watching him pull in his PB 103cm, meeting other Ausfishers etc).
Mix in the magnificent waterways, wildlife, sunrises & sunsets, the tranquility, the rainforest, the cows(!) and you understand why, despite the bad stuff, you would need quite a large number of wild horses to drag me away from Mondy!!

Hey Pete, I witnessed a fair share of your 'curse' over that trip. the trebble, the storm....but I also remember about 35 + hookups and 16 or so fish from a very happy father and son team that weekend:D...This dam has its bloody moments doesnt it!!!
you will be OK..the worm will turn mate.

Pete,
On the fishing front, my luck has taken a shocking turn for the worst....... Krispy Kreme is my favourite dessert!!!
On the mishap front, the only time accidents happen is when Navi is concerned, lost rods and reels, watches over board, minn kota prop blades, a heap of lost fish, the list goes on and on and on and on...........

Yeah Ben,
I'm finding it hard to remember exactly what it feels like when a barra strikes your lure. My last hit (and fish) was in January..........:'(
Only 3 1/2 weeks until I can try and improve my luck!
I think I'll start doing a few more dash & splash trips like Brian (BR65) just to keep the frequency and practice up........;)

Very good Chewy, i had forgotten about that.......just hope Big Ren has as well!!! Did you venture up there????
Pete
I actually had a true blue BARRA hit in the last hour of the last day....... Scared the living bejeesus out of me, i was like a green horn again, didnt know what how to wind, rod angles, i had nothing, and as a consequence he got off. And only a 95 cm model.... It can only get better from here

I had forgotten about that Chewy....
Is this all the Ranger's got Paul? Is this it?
No Ben, once we remove that 5 metres of barbed wire you sucked around the prop like a vacuum cleaner, we will go faster, I promise you.;D;D And we did:o
Benny boy said he wanted to fish the fence line...I didn't think he meant literally::)
All's forgiven mate.
Cheers

Maybe its a new style of trolling, get em however you can.Yea i went up for a look.It will be a great early morning spot but i fished it with about a metre more water, over that grassy island up the back.I really want to get back and have a look at that good frog country, and im tying some flies as we speak but i think naggs point wl be deserted in a couple weeks when i get back up there.

Chewy
We had the exact same thoughts, it looks like a great late arvo popper surface action spot... I reckon the fence is like a big neon light to the barra, they swarm around it like a bird feeder.....i just dont ever want to drive there again....
Paul.
Dunno about the 175 mate, didnt even pull us out of the hole....although it pulled 5 solid red gum fence posts out of the ground all attatched to barbed wire!!!!!!

Ben - you idiot!!!!
Mondy count for me is:
3 broken rods (all loomis)
a few blown reels
bent props
trailer damage
2 busted minn kotas
2 busted transducers
1 busted sounder from a branch falling on it
2 trebles (one in finger, one in face)
lost makos
3 lost hats
cracked gunwhale from hitting trees
dozens of bust ups and 100's of lost lures
1 UHF radio
1 brag mat
Tackle back
Esky lids
lost boat seat on last trip (black and red if anyone founds it)
And this is only what I can remember in the last 2 years, let alone the gear that Vin has lost. Last 2 trips, 2 rod and reel combos (lucky we retrieved the second one), araphat hat and a tide/moon watch.
That's why I keep going back, I'm hoping I'll find some of it ;)

Take some scuba gear, but what ever you do tie a rope to yourself you might loose yourself;D
If this is the amount of gear that is lost by our small group of Ausfishers imagine the gear lost on a yearly bassis.
Regardless of money spent and lost the IBD is far too strong we will keep going back to loose more8-)
