Looking at a used 4 stroke 60hp with 500 hrs to put on my new boat, with regular servicing is 500 hrs a lot in terms of the motors life? I have no experience with 4 strokes and can't afford a new outboard . Do you think it would be aprox 1/4? - 1/2? - 3/4? of the outboards life?
Cheers

It's just a teenager, with the caveat on total age for instance if it's not a 98 model.

the actual hours mean bugger all really, if it is well looked after then it will almost never be worn out, corosion and rust or a dud water pump (say) will kill it way before wear ever does.

What brand and year is it?
As far as the actual motor is concerned, there is not much difference between a modern car engine and 4st outboard.
500 hours averaging 60 kph would be 30,000ks, not much for a car.
I got a 2003 with about 250hrs on it, which isn't enough.

its nothing mate, my cousins 60yam 4stroke has 1300hrs on it and still runs like a dream, the motors better off being used than sitting around :)

I agree with live4fishin, motors get damaged more from sitting around rather than from being used............if it's been serviced during it's life it's fine.

I agree with the fact that if it has been proply looked after and serviced being more important than the fact it has 500 hours. It should last you as long as you want it to.

G'Day

I'm no 4 banger expert but I agree with all the above, as long as it's had it's scheduled services 500 hrs is nothing.

5000 hrs is achievable, but as FNQ and others say age will affect seals/gaskets/corrosion probably before achieving high hrs in a non commercial situation. In the auto environment taxis will invariably achieve 2-3 times the mileage of a std family car.

With my own 60 4 stroke I make sure I run the motor for at least 15 mins every 3-4 weeks if I haven't been out. I have modified and inverted (Sikaflexed the lid on and cut out a bit of the bottom rim to fit around the trim area) a big compost bin. It is big enough to run the motor for a while in reverse at about 1500 rpm without losing too much water at all. This allows the motor to run under a bit of load and get warm.

My 4 stroke Yam 50 has just cracked the 500 hour mark and never misses a beat. I have not had it out in the last 2 weeks, which is the longest its ever been out of the water.

The hours mean a lot less than the care its had in that time. It could still look like new on the outside and be just about stuffed on the inside from lack of care. Adversley, it could look like shite on the outside and and the inside (motor internals) could be spot on. My 50 Yammy is in the latter bracket as it used to be a pro motor but before he got rid of it, it had a reco powerhead and leg. It has given me no real mechanical trouble except for the carbys (E-10 related). I have put on more than 400 hrs to its clock and the previous owner said he wouldn't be surprised if he got more than 4000hrs out of it. He used to pull prawn nets in the shallows with it so it was working pretty hard for his part of its life.

My mate works for yamaha and he knows of a Yamaha f 60 thats done 13 000hrs on origanal engine. It runs all day every day. If there a quick 500hrs id say its just run in. Deano.
