Hi guys.
I have just bought a 25inch 115hp Mariner 79 model straight 6. Does anyone know what is involved in taking out the spacer to reduce it back down to a 20inch?
Cheers
Rick.

Get a Professional to do it.. QLD outboard wreckers at Burleigh do this sought of thing regularly.

you will need the driveshaft and shift shafts modified as well

If you're in Brisbane then Creek Marine at Pickering St Enoggera specialise in mercs. Speak to Mal Leishman.

Theres a bit involved to do this goldfish.

Remove the leg and remove the 5in spacer.

You will then need to replace the watertube with a 20inch tube.

You will need to strip the gearbox, remove the bearing carrier, forward gear, pinion nut and pinion gear. Replace the driveshaft with a 20in driveshaft and replace pinion gear, loctite it and torque the pinion nut. Reassemble using new orings on the bearing carrier and new carrier nut.

You will need specialist tools. The parts will likely cost you about $500+ plus your
labour or a workshops labour charges.

Alternately and more cost effective is to use an alloy plate. I have fitted many 25in engines to 20in transoms and use a plate that is 25mm thick and approx 450mm x 360mm. Essentially the plate is about 30mm wider on each side of the clamp bracket and protrudes just below the bottom of the mount bracket and sits about 75mm above the horizontal edge of the transom.

The plates look attractive and do not look like the typical "metal plate to hide a dodgy transom". Its quite obvious the reason why the plate is there and they look good. Just like a jacking plate.

If you go to a decent alloy supplier the plate will cost about $150. The more retail "stitch up" places will want $200 or more for the plate.

BM. that is excatly what i needed to know. i have a 20 inch leg here so it would only be a matter of changing the water pipe & just change legs rather than going inside of the gearbox. the raising plate won't work on my boat as the motor is going on my little ski boat.
thank you BM & others.
cheers
rick.

Your shift shaft will need changing too. Some extension kits use an extension piece on the shift shaft and others use a longer shaft overall.
