I have the $$$ but am stuck at a crossroads between the 5.8 Formosa Center Console & the 6000 Ocean Craft Center console.

I realise that I'm comparing apples with oranges but I still really need some help with this purchase as it will probably be in the $40,000+ range.

The Formosa comes with a 115hp Honda & the Ocean Craft with a TOHATSU 70hp

Trailers are comparable and add-ons will be the same.

I'm after a boat that will fish the outer reef and get me and the crew home safely..........

Your experienced comments are most welcome.

Forget about the ocean craft if it is fitted with a 70hp engine, thats almost absurd, at 3500rpm it will hardly be planing, 90hp possibly as an absolute minimum if you plan to hit the reef and not just putter around an estuary. Very hard to imagine a 70hp engine even going close to trimming a boat like that one. Any 4cyl 115hp would make it a cracker...

cheers fnq

Are you commited to a new boat? There is plenty of money to be saved looking for a slightly used boat and motor , say something with less than 150 hrs on the motor. It will still be a great boat without the initial hit of deprecation! The current market can only help!

And this hull will eat the cruise craft

Hi Ian,

When you say 150 hrs, do you mean for a 4 stroke only, or would you recommend that for 2 & 4 strokes, or inboards as well?

Well to start with im not recomending but imho!;D 150 is nothing for either a 2 or 4 stroke as long as it's been looked after. I just see great value in near new used boats!

Of the two personally I'd prefer the O/C, if only for the hull shape, the safety factor of which appeals to me more than the sexy looks of the Formosa.
But with a tojo 90 (at least), if you're taking crew!
Aren't the O/C considerably cheaper (bare hull) than the Formosa?
As FT says, the near-new second hand market is pretty good atm.
If you don't mind glass, a hydrofield might be worth a look, would take a little more than a 90 to get it along tho!
Cheers and enjoy your purchase.

yep, agree on that one, as long as the rig is well looked after, there is a dozen reasons why people sell or have to sell a near new Boat, there is serious Dollars to be saved, but then of course it is not NEW! even if the price is only a few grand cheaper, it can also include a lot of stuff that you would need to buy and add on later, so look around, don't be put off by personal opinions on Motor/Boat brands and so on, any of the major makers will serve you well.

The ocean Craft, is that the 'inflatable style' alloy boat here: http://www.oceancraft.com.au/6000pkg1.htm

Having been in a Formosa, I would go that route, it would have better resale, its very stable as we said the other night and there's plenty of fishing room. Great boat, I would buy one in a flash, but I'de go the 135 honda or even the 150....I've got a bit more need for speed.

Thought I would give this a bump for you michael.....its falling down the list and 40 grand isn't to be spent lightly
