Hi Guys, I am looking at a 1996 quintrex 4.75 bayhunter with evinrude 50hp 2 cylinder outboard I think same year as boat, I have not inspected the boat as yet, only seen pics. Motor looks very small for the boat, owner ensures me it performs very well and is very reliable. Has anyone had one of these motors.

A 50hp 2 cyl can look smaller than a 40 hp 3cyl, and being 2 cyl might seem lumpy at idle, but at cruising and wot would be good, go for a test drive, test the compresion and have a mech or 2 give his opinion, cheerz:)

Have a 1990 Evinrude 50 hp with about 1000 hours on my 5m cc express. Just replaced it with a 70hp Johno. The 50 has been an excellent motor & should keep going for another 2000 hours under normal conditions with the appropriate professional & home maintenance. If the 50 on the quintrex you are considering has been properly maintained with services every 100 hours then it should be in good condition, but you won't know that unless you get a qualified trusted marine tech to inspect it. Performance will depend on correct height mounting on the transom & the right prop being fitted. It should give you a WOT (wide open throtle) RPM of 4000 to 5000 RPM, preferably 4500 to 4800 at WOT. Depending on how heavily loaded the boat is, sea conditions etc & correctly trimmed at cruise you should be looking for about 18-20kts (33-37 kph) at 3000-3400 rpm with about 0.4 ltr/km (2.5 km/ltr) (those figures were for a total weight of about 800kg - 3 x adult males, 70ltr fuel, 150 ltr esky with contents, & about 350 kg of baot, motor, gear)

Everything is relative - depends what you intend to do with the boat, but don't part with your hard earned pennies until you get the entire set up, including the trailer checked by someone who knows & then go for a test ride with someone who knows how to test a 2nd hand boat.

Use this to verify the manufacture year. The model number should be on a metalic sticker near the port engine mount or tilt bracket.

I had a 50hp evenrude on the back of my 4.6 metre nautiglass half cabin. It used to fly. I am sure that the nautiglass would be much heavier. I replaced it with a 60hp 4 stroker and cant tell much difference except noise levels and quiteness and no oil fumes. I rarely push my new motor to WOT. usually around 38-4000rpm gets me there in plenty of time at night and day time maybe 4500. Most times its to rough to push it all full revs anyway. Best of luck with your purchase.
