With all the reports of cobia lately i had to get out and give them a shot. Just as we arrived at a wreck off mooloolaba we saw a pro sinking his gaff into a decent little cobe, we were thinking "yes, they are on!" , but it wasnt to be. Spent two hours drifting this wreck with baits and plastics with not a touch, the other boat also failed to land another fish in that time. Things were looking grim and we needed a change of tactic, someone called out "how far is the banks from here?" i replied "about 20k". We all looked at eachother and said "why the hell not?".
We hammered up to the bottom end of the banks in beautiful conditions and were anchored up and berlying by 4:15pm. We scored 3 squire and lost 2 in the first 20min.. but then the anchor pulled and we spent 1/2hr trying to get back on the spot. Once set again we got another 6 snapper/squire, a 5/6kg spangled emperor, and a few more dropped before heading in before 7pm. By the time we got back to mooloolaba the wind had picked up and was gusting 20knots.
Most fish caught floating a half-pilly on a single 6/0 with a pea sinker. They werent interested in ganged whole pillies or even whole/half pike.
No photos.. all squire 1-3kg.

fleety -- had a 7inch gulp in lime tiger on a 3/4 jig head in the water for much of the time we were fishing and to my surprise it wasnt touched once. The fish seemed to be very picky, only taking small baits.
