i wouldnt mind the new version...i bought one from e^%$...only cost me $30 but its in pristine cond the dust jacket is a bit ratty but its a 1986 reprinted edition...in hindsight i probably should have saved my money for a newer version (be good to compare books actually)...how much for the new one???...thanks for the heads up Ronnie :D

I priced the last edition at Dymocks and they wanted $122. Buying direct from Ern is the best deal I think and hopefully the best deal for him as well (no middle man).

Cheers

Hi all
Sent my order in yesterday and looking forward to getting it as it has been a long wait.
Hubby doesn't know it yet but its a belated birthday present that we can both use.
For the price of $99.00 I don't think you can go wrong. The previous editions i have seen are great and this one is meant to be better???

It will be a step up as hubby still has his 1972 edition!!!!

Will update as I am sure everyone else will once they get their copy.

If you order direct you get it autographed too.

I'm posting off for mine today;D ;D ;D

Decent fishing guide........ this is the scriptures... or at least the gospel according to Ern.

In australia I don't think there is a better book published.

Picked up our copy today from PO.
As book was a present for hubbie I asked for an inscription. This was wonderful and was anyone else told what number copy they had????

Book is excellent and as always the pictures are true to life.

This is a great book and was " The Bible ". and to an extent still is, BUT, it is NOT the guide used legally for identifying species by the DPI&F. They have their own version.

BUT, you can be rest assured that 99.9% of species ID's are the same in both books.

Grants Guide to Fishes is probably the most sort after book for fishoes and would make a wonderful " fathers day " gift....... hint !!!

I have the smaller version " Grants Fishes of Australia ".

Enjoy the read people.....

Phill, you wouldn't know if the DPI version is available from the Government printer by any chance would you?

I still intend to get a copy of the Grant's one, but having the same book as DPI use would have to be handy...

OK, seems that I have been mislead.

The DPI&F do not have a Fish ID book as such.

There are publications that can be purchased from the Gov bookshop;

https://www.bookshop.qld.gov.au/home.aspx

The legal guide is the one we find at:-

http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/cps/rde/dpi/hs.xsl/28_630_ENA_HTML.htm

if you need further info:-

callweb@dpi.qld.gov.au.

Geez Phil - Given that Ern Grant's book has just been reprinted, isn't it about time that DPI updated theirs? Check the attached image, was last updated in 2006?!?:-/

Ern Grant's book has had 3 revisions since 1999 (source - http://www.grantsguidetofishes.com/book.htm): (http://www.grantsguidetofishes.com/book.htm%29:)

Eighth edition 1999 (3,000 copies)
Ninth edition 2002 (3,000 copies)
Tenth edition 2004 (3,000 copies)
Eleventh edition 2008 (5,000 copies)

Are they (DPI) trying to say that there has been no changes in the last 2 years?

Not discounting what you say (with regards to DPI), just find it hard to believe that the "official" source hasn't been updated in two years...

Andrew, nice spotting, but I will think you'll find it was only ' that ' page that has not been updated, and the page itself does not offer facts.

You have to click on a link to get to the facts.

They ( DPI&F ) do update regularly but one glaring omission was the Seasonal Closures for the CRFF. They seem to get a tad behind in this area, and do get ' pushes ' from certain members of the public in regard to this so that certain members can make plans well in advance for certain fishing adventures north of Brisbane. :-X ;)

If you have a squizz here :-

http://www2.dpi.qld.gov.au/fishweb/2772.html

you will note that the facts have been updated 01/04/2008

and the Tidal Species rules page was updated as late as July this year.

RFARREN, I have searched the " bookshop " and can't find it. There are a number of ' private ' booklets and charts available that do the job, trouble is the DPI&F seem to change the rules every year... I am sure it confuses them as much as me ;D :-/

try here to find a book.:-

I'm not sure about Grant's but I know AFN makes one ( http://www.afn.com.au/shop/scditem.asp?ProdID=729 ). You might want call them up to check how recently it has been updated though, or ask whether they have a new version coming out soon.

Grants is the only good one,the others have a habit of fluffing out the pages with useless to fisherman - fish, or are simply not concise enough especially in this day and age of reversed legal responsibility.

Every now and then Gov (dunno about QLD) will order a batch and offer them at at a good discount to their employees, they get snapped up.

Grants is the bomb IMO for the average fisho and also often the average fisheries conservation officer (non warrent-ed). Still hoping the 11th holds up to it's pre release claims.

Yep likewise mine lives in the boat every time I travel away on holidays,it is circa 1982 (the year I got it) and to be honest unless someone discovers a new edible species of some consequence I'll be happy with the one Ive got.

Bought the new edition for the old man for father's day. Didn't put it down for the first two days after i recieved it before i gave it to him. Definately worth the money. No, it's not printed on waterproof paper anymore as it was too costly. The old man hasn't put it down since i gave it to him either. Morgan grant was really helpful in getting the book to me in a short timeframe too.
