Hi Team.
Is an extra $1000 worth the extra 15HP in these new donks?
Weight of donk is the same for both.

$1000 is cheap for 15 horsepower..... Normally you pay $1000 for 10hp..... And from reports I have heard the 130 is a gem, and te extra poke behind the boat is will always come in handy.... The fact that it weigh's the same as the 115 is a added bonus......
IRC it's a $2500 increase from the 225 to 250hp

Yes, same displacement, as is the new 115HO. The 115HO and the 130 will be the same price apparently, and very similar performance;

More power is usually always better Splash. As Jabba said $1,000 is not much for an extra 15 horses. I heard the price difference was only $800, but may have been ex GST!?
The benefit of more horses is usually that you can cruise at lower rpms for basically the same fuel consumption, but with greater reserves of power when you need it. The motor will work easier to carry the same speed, meaning less stress, wear etc.
My experience with my E-Tec 150 compared to my old Johnson 150 (1993) is it is definitely more powerful, no doubts in my mind despite the same hp rating. The E-tec cruises at 22/24knots at 3750/3850 rpms. Same speed with the Johnson required 4300/4400 rpms. Fuel consumption is about half the old Johnson and the new motor seems to do everything effortlessly in comparison.
If you can afford it in my view always go for the highest hp rating you can afford, irrespective of brand. The only question mark is weight differences, but that is usually not a big issue.

Gosh, I love it when Splash researches something. He just digs and digs and digs for answers, seeking second, third and fourth opinions about whatever he is researching until all the cobwebs have been shaken out of the matter.
Good on you, Splash!
I searched Ausfish for info on VHF radios recently and was delighted to see a thread started by Splash on the same subject and how he had done it to death and had surfaced all the answers that I was looking for, myself.
I guess that when one lives in a remote locale like Arnhem Land, you have to research every detail as fixing any problems is not as simple as driving back to the store and demanding a remedy like we can in the big smoke.
Good on ya, Splash! I love your work!:)

That is about what I paid extra ( think it was $1200 for memory ) for the 200hp Opti as opposed to the 175hp, however they were also different blocks, 175hp = 2.5 litre block, 200hp = 3 litre block, no comparison in my eyes.
IF you go ahead, spend the extra, it's worth it.

Hey Splash
Another thing worth considering is looking into the 115HO. They run around the 125hp and have stronger gear box. For the same price as a 130 I would go the 115HO.
Have you visited this website

thanks boys.
I did not know about the 115HO... I will look into this and report back.
As most donks are generally mroe HP than their rated spec, wouldnt the 130HP be a little bit better tahn the 115HO (at 125HP actual)?
Thanks Charelville for your positive comments - much appreciated.

This comment is from a dealer on the link I posted earlier;
.......From what I have been told the new HO is 126HP at the prop while the new 130HP is a few HP more, but not like the 10% of the HO.........

From what I understand the manufacturers can be within a certain percentage plus or minus to the stated HP so a 130 could have lower than 130hp. But the HO stands for high output and can be within 10% greater than the stated HP. Thus the 125hp out of a 115HO. The benefit of the 115HO is that you will get close to the same if not more than any particular 130hp as well as a stronger gear box. I would also suggest better resale later on.
Now this is information that I have heard and I cannot back it up with written facts. I am sure someone from BRP could confirm or rebuke this info.

Yes Brad, you are basically on the money. There is a 10% rule in the USA that requires goods to be within 10% of stated specifications. So a 115HO could in theory be as high as 126.4hp and meet the regulations. That is apparently the case. Most outboards are usually at least on the money in terms of hp.
The advantage of 115HO model will be that it will be legal on a transom rated at 115hp maximum.
Cheers
