The beacon to beacon shows a wreck symbol in the pine river up past the bruce hwy bridge near the paper mill.

There is a marker buoy and the sounder showed up some structure.

does anyone know whats down there?

i once heard it was an old beam trawler?

Haven't quite worked out what it is mate. You can easily see it at low tide and it holds some bloody big jacks and a truckload of cod!

From what i'm lead to believe its something to do with the sand mine there.
Maybe an old bardge.

From my time down there it's an old dredge or barge next to the sand and gravel quarry.

Its an old barge. It lurks there just below the waterline ready to dint your boat or prop. I hit it about 20 years ago and damaged a prop on a hire boat from deep water bend.

I have also heard that its a barge from the sand mine.
It is also where everyone seems to cast net for prawns isn't it?

Hi,

I think you guys might be mistaking the wreck I am talking about?

Its not the old sand barge about 30 -40m up from the Bruce Hwy bridge.

This one is up towards petrie further, you go around a sharp bend in the river close to the paper mill and there is a red buoy there and the structure is almost under the buoy.

just past castle hill and the green marker ? i have seen a boat hit that at full speed , i would guess it was from the paper mill its not really big enough for a quarry barge . its a good spot for herring and when the prawns are on you can normally pick up a few there .

cheers nico

Its an old Quarry gravel barge that used to ply the river from the dredges to the screening plants. There are 3 of them in the river on the bottom. One near Castle Hill Estate just upstream accross the middle of the river with a green marker to keep you from hitting it. The other two are downstream near the bridge basically side by side nearer the southern bank.

There is also another boat on the bottom in the South Pine River not too far from the Junction in relatively deep water as well.

Jack.

Hi,

I cant remeber the depth sorry, i have only gone over it at high tide though and havent hit it.

Although one of the earlier posts says he has seen someone hit it?

Yes, it's a barge. Just by the green marker there's a hole about 18 -22ft but that green marker has heaps of chain on it and moves about a bit. Always keep close to the red as sometimes the green can sit directly over the barge. The prawns ball up in the hole but it takes a hammering from the old timers.

I've sat there many a day and am amazed at how many don't come to grief. they go past at full belt on the wrong side of the green. You can actually see it just below the surface on a king low...........like about 6":o. I've been smashed many a time there as it holds a large head of pike eels. I thought it may hold a jack or two, but judging by the number of pike eels there, I don't think anything else could survive in the vicinity.

It's an accident waiting to happen for those that don't slow.

Edit: An afterthought...........after heavy rain a lot of crap, water hyacinth etc comes down the river. I've reported to the harbour master on a number of occasions that the bouy gets dragged under when the crap accumulates on the chain and is a danger when it's missing. I'm guessing that's whay it has extra chain on it, but it still disappears in flood.

I was throwing a cast net over it a few years back and scoring quite a few prawns until the boat drifted over the high part of the barge and nearly launched me into the water. I kept away from it from that day onwards.

I have seen the barge's timber buffer beam out of the water twice in yrs gone by. Seen it merely inches from the surface many times. I think that timber buffer beam will have many a skeg mark on it by now.
