View Full Version : 712 Power WINCH Enough???
Is a 712 Power Winch big enough for a 5.3 m Fibreglass Boat.
Have seen on here before that the 712 is faster than the 912 .
Is this the case.
Thanks

yeah, it should be ok troy. i actually use a 315 to pull up our 6.2m boat, it is a little undersized but i'm not shy when it comes to backing the trailer in the water and so it pulls it out quite easy. the trick is to use a nice big cable (and a fuse of course) that connects through the car and right onto the battery terminals to keep the voltage drop nice and low.
Is it the case that although the 712 is smaller then the 912 does the 712 winch up faster.
Thanks
Troy
Any opinions most welcomed as i had a 625 Outsider and the 912 was very slow winching it up.
Sorry if winches have been discussed before but i need opinions as this is a 5.3 m and as i have stated above i have seen on this site that the 712 winches up faster.

a mate has a 712 winch on his 575 outsider and it works great , i have the 912 on my 625 outsider and i wish i went with the 712 .
the 712 has taller gearing than the 912 and it winches much faster and handles the wieght of the 575 with ease .
i hope that helps

Troy,
Can you tell me if these winches are power in & out?
I have been thinking of adding an elec winch, there are heaps of cheap crap on the market and most are power in but freewheel out and my boat comes off the trailer too quick if i dont let if off with the winch slowly.

both the models discussed are power in and freewheel out . they both have a little hand wheel that operates the clutch that you use to control the free wheel out and it works a treat , it is the way to go as the power out models are a lot more expensive and would powerout very slowly and i would think not necessary unless your boat is very heavy .
my 625 outsider would weigh about 1.9t i would think and the clutch controls that with ease .

FYI
712 is 14 fpm
912 is 8 fpm
The clutch bearings in these are very small and IMHO you should use lots of care and preferably an alternative to this method of lowering a boat off the trailer.
Also when hauling the boat on I was advised to engage the clutch (black knob) only after the power is switched on so you only apply just enough pressure on the bearings to effectively engage the clutch.
IMHO use a rope and climbing "8" or wrap it around the winch post or similar to lower the boat off the trailer to reduce the potential for bearing damage on the Powerwinch.
