G'day

If in doubt, and the $$ is available, go the bigger engine

if the Hull is rated to take a 40hp, then get it

As above, go the 40hp.

I'd go the 40. It's a long time to wish you did if you go the 30.

BB - I have a 4.5m Quinnie with a 50HP Johnno - she does 53kmh flat stick.

Based on that - I would think the 30 would a little bit lacking.

Go the 40 - you'll be glad you did.

Yep, go the 40. I have a 40 Mariner on my 4.3m tinnie and it is certainly not overpowered nor too heavy.

the 40 will be alot more fun and if you carry xtra weight it'll still go , my old mariner on a 4.1 tops out at 64 klm's on my own so I can cruise at 40-50 easy.

I have a 4.5 Seajay Territory ( similar hull if your getting the reverse chines) with a 50 4 stroke on the back,, go the 40. The 50 is good with 2 people and gear,

I've got the same size hull in a runabout, seeker, 50kgs more than yours. 30hp cruises at 35klms all day

Dont think about it just go the forty. If you go the 30 you will probably get the shits within a few months and then you have to try and sell a second hand motor to get something you could have had from the beggining.

If you go on overnight trips you tend to take more gear and its surprising how fast it adds up. I went the 40 on my 4.2m and with three of us (370kg) and the gear i have no problam planning and cruises comfortably.

Money well spent i believe

Go the 40 mate. Well worth it. It will probably not use any more fuel than the 30. If you buy the 30 initially with the thought to upgrade later on, forget it. It will cost you a motza.

I am assuming you are talking about 2 strokes.

The 40hp Suk has a displacement of 696cc, the 30hp is only 499cc!, that's 40% more displacement for a few hundred dollars extra. A no brainer IMO.

I have a 30HP on a 4m Explorer Trophy and I feel its underpowered. Definately 40Hp...always go the max

Dunno if I need to answer because you should be talked into the 40 by now ;D . I put a 40 on a 4.5M runabout. Gets along nicely at 35k which isn't real fast but suits me nicely. Goes well with 2 up. On that basis I am happy. But - put 3 up and a bit of gear aboard and it starts to struggle to get out of the hole. Its licenced for 5. I've tried that - and only just gets on the plane after 50 metres. I should have gone a bit bigger. So should you.

Hi Breamboss, just curious how much you paid for the 4.4m xpack? Looking at an upgrade myself.

I bought a 4.25 shadow mirage two years ago with a 30 hp 2 stroke(recomended HP), which is great if you have two skinny guys and no gear on board(I'm the size of two skinny guys). I just had anew yammy 40hp 2 stroke fitted and can't believe the difference it made to the boat, but I am pissed off because if I went with the 40 to start with it would of only cost me another grand but after selling the 30 and fitting the 40 it has ended costing me another 3 grand. So believe me go for the forty.Cheers Kingo.

Whats the hull rated to? A 50 would be an even better bet if the boat will carry it, but don't go the 30, I think you'll find it way underpowered.

Dave.

To me, if I was considering the difference, I'd go with max HP rating for your hull, especially in this range of choices. What do I mean by that? Between a 30 and 40HP your differences in fuel consumption is going to be next to nothing, so to stay with a smaller donk will only be determined by the extra moola you have to part with up front. I have always enjoyed the horsepower of a 70 on a 4.3mtr glass boat, which is the max HP for this hull, and I think that to have put a 50HP or 60HP motor on her ( I have tried to waterski with a mates 50HP on similar size boat) would have been dissappointing. The 40HP will not restrict your usage of the boat as much as a 30 would. One mate took his tinny outside on a glassy day from Brunswick river - On his way back in, a green wave stood up behind him, sucking water out from underneath. That's when he wished he had more than 30 ponies on the back. But he made it...... Just!!:o Rolled it a few months later though!!!
