We are in the middle of building a boat shed at our beach place and we have been given that many different opinions on how much sand and gravel plus cement we need.
The foundation is 7 metres by 6 metres.
Can anyone help here as we have to take all materials over by boat as it is only accesible by sea.
Thanks

Troy if you are saying the shed slab is 6mt by 7mt and the slab is 100ml thick well thats 4.2 cubic meters of concrete i always add .2 extra incase its a little thick somewhere so 4.4 cubic meters . Call a gravel and cement supplier to give you mix ratios because i usually buy premix in a truck and dont forget your mesh you will need 3 sheets of f 62 ,they come in 6mt by 2.4 sheets i hope that helps somewhat ...matt

As you are obviously building in a coastal area in Nth Qld make sure that you allow for extra concrete for the holes/footings if you are concreting the legs in as well as some welded cross members on the legs below ground ...if you are simply dynabolting to the slab then make sure you allow for edge thickening right around.
This might add another metre or so(depending of course on how wide and deep you dig) of material to the original 4.2 cu.m.(for a 10cm deep slab of 7mx6m)..

Of course these are perfect scenario situations ...make sure once you set up the formwork that you spend a bit of time to get it nice and level inside so that there are no hollows that will mean more concrete...always best to get it set up nice and pour day will be easy.

I did a 12 x8.5m slab about 3 weeks ago...I set it up pretty good and worked it out so as to not waste any concrete and there were only 3 barrow loads of concrete left once the trucks had gone.

Troy, is this shed in Nth Qld? do you have plans for it? this will give you the thickings ( or rat wall) around the slab or any other footings for the shed post as Scott pointed out, i would also go with S/S mesh, not really sure on the materials ( not mixed by hand for years, you poor bugga ) but if you give readymix a call and tell them on what your doing they would sure help you out,

Hope not Ian as i do not even want to do the job.
Hard work over there every thing from the mainland has to be bagged and taken by boat.

There are 8 footings and by the plans they are 500 /500/500
One Builder has told me i will need as much concrete for these as the slab.
Seems a lot but i am not a builder.
Thanks for the help.

Just as well as that builder is not quoting on you slab.

mate to work it out just figure out the volume you want to concrete..

ie 0.5m x0.5m x0.5m =0.125m

then times by 8.....=1 cu.m.

just add this to the 4.2 that is needed for the slab....= 5.2 cu.m and have a few bags of cement and a bit of premix spare and go for it.

Oh and you will probably need about 20 x 20kg bags of cement per cu.m.

And maybe find another builder from whom to obtain advice from.http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/wink.gifhttp://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/grin.gif

I watched a large Gov open plan building being erected on dodgy land, they used Styrofoam blocks thought the slab expanse, could this be adapted - properly of coarse.

They could be daisy chained across:)

if I understand what he is asking here, it is how much Sand, Gravel and Cement he needs, as he is going to have to carry it all by hand, and then mix it by hand, is this the case? if so, that is a lot to mix, but it can be done, you could also do it in managable squares, as you will never mix 4+ metres by hand in one go.

This is the case as if you do not have enough of everything and you run out there is no hardware store to run down to .
Gravel and sand the same.
Been told with 2 mixers going should finish it in 3 hours.
Thanks

Good point Noel ...depending on the vigour of the mixing crew it might be wise to set up the formwork so as to break the big slab up into ,for example,4 smaller squares as then each square could easily be finished in a morning session.
Particularly important as we head into the hotter weather where the concrete will go off quicker and the enthusiasm of the man on the shovel wanes.
It might sound funny but I swear the bloody premix gets heavier as the day wears on.http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/wink.gifhttp://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/grin.gif
Three cheers for readymix,I say.http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/smiley.gif

FNQ,he is still going to need a basic 100 mm thick slab with a footing under each post...just no escaping that, if its to be done right and as per the engineering plans.

Was that the same builder that told you that you would need as much concrete for the footings as the slab.http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/undecided.gif

That is him i think he had to much of that amber stuff the night before he looked at the site.
He said two and a driver on each mixer.
