I was cleaning some fish at the Scarby ramp on sunday night and while I was there a couple of guys arrived at the other side of the cleaning table to clean their fish. One of them appeared to be wearing a cap that had a series of tiny LED lights in the edge of the peak. After I got home I got to thinking...what a bloody top idea. Does anyone know of this set up or where I can get them - as they appear to be ideal for night fishing and also cleaning fish at cleaning tables that have poor lighting. My Severely spiked and cut fingers would appreciate the info.

Cheers

I saw them in BCF on the weekend. Also common on Ebay plus you can get variations is light colour ie 3 x white with 2 x red 5 x red 5 x white 5 x UV 3 x UV or 3 x white are the ones i recall off the top of my head. Usually going for 99c with from a couple of dollars to about 6 bucks postage.

I have a UV set and they are good for what they are, I would prefer a wider feild of light tho......they tend to be tiny spotlights.

Jack.

Thanks guys. These were blue, prolly about 6 lights, and had enough light to seee your immediate work area quite well......not looking for something to light up the car park...just enough to be able to see what im doing without having to keep my head that still. Not a huge fan of internet shopping, would rather go touchy feely before I part with my hard earned.

Greg ..... These things are the bees knees !!!!! My mate "The Jinx" picked up for me these in the US30891
They are much better than the Petzl miners lamp type ! ....... If you cant buy the 5 LEDs here .... Then go the 3 LED Cats eyes or Master Vision( $30)

i've included a couple of Pics ... with one taken in a pitch dark bathroom ( no camera flash) 30892
I would recommend them to anyone!!!!!!!

Castledine bait and tackle had some (different brand) the last time I was in there for about $15.00 - $20.00.

Also keep an eye out in the fishing/camping section of 2 dollar type shops. Our local one next to kmart at arana hills had them for $5.00. I bought 5 of them so all the kids have one each when we go camping. Have run out of stock now though.

The one you're talking about is the one that actually has the lights built into the hat. Not the cats eyes. I can only find them at my local commercial fishing disposal shop at the co-op. Haven't seen them anywhere else. They are a complete hat with the little switch on the back on the strap.

Ive been thru about 5 sets of these great items.

The cap style ones are ok, as long as the hat fits your head. I find a lot of fit all caps dont really fit that well. It only takes a bit of breeze to knock em into the water, and the lights are ruined.

I prefer the clip on style.
The 3 light Cats Eyes were ok, but a bit dim.
The 5 light style from ebay was the same. The flasher switch on/off was a pain too.
The 3 light Nite Owl brand from BCF is the best tho. Nite Owl took over Cats Eyes, and put in brighter globe, and improved the switch, so you only switch it once, not twice. battery life is about 60 hrs.

The miners lamp style will be much brighter again, but the elastic band gives me headaches.

I use Nite Owls for tying knots and rigging bait or lures, but remember to turn em off, so your not shining light into the water. It can turn some fish off.

Supercheap auto have a cap with built in led lights. it was about 9 bucks i think. not sure of branding.
Also found a clip on 5 led cap light(catseye knock-off) for $2.99 at the cheap shop in tweed city shopping centre. came with the 2 "coin" batteries required.

Got mine from that Mart place we are not allowed to talk about for $9.95.
They fell in the drink, along with my cap of course, never worked again. :'(
The lights that is , hat still worked fine.8-)
It would be good if they made some serious water proof ones, maybe I will seal up the next ones with some silicon or something.:-/

As others have said, the 5-led clip on ones are available at BCF. They were situated on the display right in front of the cash registers.

BTW - why are we not allowed to mention AY-mart here? How bloody ridiculous.

I think its a bit silly too really. Freedom of speech is a right in this land...

I was told years ago by a moderator (I think it was for refering to that bay auction site beginning with e - so long ago I cant remember now) not to use it - and the word was missing from the text when the mod reviewed my post (or maybe it just didnt show up in the script)...

Maybe it has something to do with a sponsor who is in opposition??? I have no idea.... Maybe a moderator can tell us?

I can understand if someone slanders a company based on personal opinion rather than matter of fact / objective reason - but other than that... I believe, you should be able to promote a good deal and let the ausfish community know where / who is doing what for us.

From what I heard they stole some photos off our website and used them without permission. Cheeky buggers.

We now have a spam filter that auto blanks out that name from any post, as well as a few others, like gambling houses, porn, etc.

So they are alway referred to as 'the mart that shall not be mentioned'.

Thanks Gecko mate for shedding some light on the matter - knew it had to be something!

I would take that as a complement though... Yes they should ask... but no use disadvantaging yourself from not promoting their specials...

I guess its the way you look at it...

Here is the deal of the year for anyone interested in the lights that affix to the brim of your cap.

I first bought the Catseye version of these about two years ago for $28 at a tackle shop and it was wonderful until I got caught in a bad storm and my cap was blown off my head and into water at the bottom of my boat. The storm threw me around a lot so I could not retrieve the cap in time to save the light from water damage. Big regrets over a $28 headlight!

To my eternal joy, I was referred to a Chinese website a few weeks ago by my son whose mates have bought a fair bit of really cheap computer connectors and various other gizmos from this site and who were very pleased with their purchases. Lo and behold, that site sells these headlights.

I subsequently bought one of these lights from that website for about $3 delivered by airmail from China. I wore that light this week at Jumpinpin on Sunday and Monday nights and I cannot tell any difference in quality between that $3 light and the $28 version that I had two years ago, except that the $3 has five LED lights instead of the three that the Catseye had. The switch on the unit allows you to switch between three or five lights. The lights come with batteries included.

So this morning, I ordered another three of these lights at a grand total of USD$8.85 which at the current exchange rate equates to $9.09 in real money or $3.03 each. You can buy just one at that price delivered to your home if you want to.

Note that the airmail postage is free! Last time that I bought one of these, it took about six working days to arrive.

The website address is http://www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.916

As an afterthought, I should mention that I have also bought a number of computer related connectors and related items from this site at very cheap prices compared to say, Dick Smith Electronics. eg a HDMI to DVI cable that would cost about $45 here for a short version (this one was 3 m long) for $13.50. The quality of those goods was fine.

I think you may want to re-check that Braddles. We have no constitutionally defined 'freedom of speech' in this country. Quite apart from that, this is a private forum so even if we did have the 'freedom of speech' in a public place, those same rights would not necessarily exist 'in here'. I do agree with you that it is a bit silly not to be able to use the name of AY-mart here.

From what I heard they stole some photos off our website and used them without permission. Cheeky buggers.

If the owner was 1/2 smart, s/he would have placed 'www.ausfish.com.au' on all the pics being used by (and it is easy to find out exactly who is linking to what) AY-mart thus using their own lack of respect for Ausfish to get free advertising on their site. I myself am an internet retailer and have had images from my site linked to by other websites (thus appearing as pics on the other site) - I've used this to my advantage by putting my own URL on the pics in question so when my rival sites use my pics, they are, in fact, promoting my site for me EVERYTIME someone goes to the relevant web-page that is featuring my images. (Of course I'm assuming the pics that were 'stolen' were used on a website - but I just can't see a BIG-$$ chain like AY-mart using web-optimised images for print ads - they would look completely crap!)

Of course the owners of Ausfish are free to employ any strategy they feel like to 'get back' at AY-mart.

BTW - when someone posts an image of a fish here (by attaching that image to the post -rather than linking - thus using Ausfish's server resources) - who then is the 'owner' of said image? Just asking out of interest - is this covered in the user agreement (I cannot remember).

edit -> PS sorry for the thread hijack. The whole subject of 'ownership' on the internet is interesting to me both professionally and personally.

I dont think anyones trying to get back at anyone. When 2 business owners have a dispute, they both need to consider possible legal action. Once theyre in a dispute position, they both have an obligation to minimise further escalation of the dispute. Its called a 'duty of care' and the owners are right to protect their ass. Now lets get back to topic. If you want to discuss this further, maybe start a new thread. Weve been asked not to name them, and I want to respect that. Headlights anyone? Charlie, the Nite Owls from bcf are still better than the chinese ones cos the globes are stronger. Try em and see.

... but they are over eight times the price. :(

Truly, the Chinese one had all the light that I needed when I used it on two nights this week. If I want more, I might be tempted to use a fixed light on the boat but I have used them in the past ( a fluoro) and they can be a nuisance.

Nonetheless, many thanks for the info. :)
