myself id like to go a honda if i can afford it espesally if its one of the new models, ive been out in alot of boats and for fuel efficiantcy overall quietness id go honda.
a few mates have got em and after 6years of owning them they have never missed a beat and still start first time every time.
though i think the merc are the fastest for there horse power rateing

I run a 225 Yammie 4 banger, and cannot find a fault with it, so Yamaha was my vote, however I'm sure there are owners of other brands both 4s and 2s that are just as pleased with their choice as I am with mine.

I have to vote Johnson. My 55hp is 31 years old and just WILL NOT stop. Oil runs down the leg, the paint is flaking but every time I turn the key it fires and runs like a dream.

I like the yammie 4 stroke 60hp my fav BUT i don't have one i have a suzuki 2007 model and can't fault that either.
If you are looking for information :-/ I wouldn't be going for honda my mate has a 50 4 stroke on a 4.2m edge tracker and 30 4 stroke and on a 3.9 dory and they are nothing special the 50 starter motor stuffed up and the 30 wasn't running well at one stage.
My mate has a 60 yammy 4 stroke on a 440 makocraft and it uses less fuel then the 50 on the edge cracker. I don't think honda 4 strokes are direct injected not 100% sure on that tho it might be why the yammy uses less fuel.:-/
All motors seem good nowdays even the grey achor (tohatsu) are decent.

you need an all of the above button for those that feel that in this day & age they are all pretty much the same as each other.
It's just that some have a preference for brand loyalty for one reason or another & others have been sucked in by slick advertising...
i Have owned Evinrude, Johnson,Mariner an old Hanimex & now a Merc, every single motor has been great & would have any of them again..

I have a 250 Verado (my first outboard), I bought it because the technology excited me, and it seemed a good match for my boat. Certainly not disappointed, either.

The only marketing issue that helped convince me was the ETEC stuff, which I couldn't bring myself to trust, but enough has been said of that elsewhere, so please guys, don't make me reach for the popcorn!;D;D;D

The next engine I buy will be purchased for exactly the same reason. Don't know what brand it will be, so no vote from me!

Cheers,

Tim

Got a 5 Hp British Sea gull at home, it's out lived me father and sure as hell will out live me. It starts but who the hells going to use one on the back of there boat.

Then again might suite a Polly craft.

But better off sticken it in a drum and using it to wash clothes, and another good thing your zippers will never rust.

I voted Yamaha because that's what I've currently got and I like it. I've previously had a Mariner, a Yamaha, a Suzuki, a Mercury, another Mariner, a Tohatsu and now another Yamaha. Liked em all.

I own a Yammy 4stroke
I voted the Tohatsu
I had a feeling the Tohatsu would be coming last
And i like backin the underdog.

Lets do a poll called
"who voted for the type of motor they own in the "Favorite motor brand poll".

this pole seems to say that yamaha are still on top i 'am a bit surprised that merc is battleing for second with suzy.

Still a small sample yet

Its interesting that Merc sells more outboards in the world than any other maker....yet its not the fav...ie people who have them are not just voting for them because they have them. I have owned 2 Mercs - one old and one 12 months old when I bought it. I now have a 14 year old Yammy. I honestly prefer my 14 year old Yammy over the almost new Merc - but the Merc was a good motor no doubt.

Interesting results so far.

No bad motors only bad operators and mechanics.
I have had many different brands and they all worked well.
Lets face it they are all built to the lowest possible price.

May be people are not voteing merc because they have been down the same road i have when i purchased a brand new one a few years back. I understand any new item can have problems,i was never able to understand mercury marine and their attitude so 7months later it was traded on a new yamaha.

I've had 1 very old 115hp Evinrude, 1/ 70hp 2 stroke Merc, 1/ 15hp 2 stroke Merc, 1/ 25 4 stroke Yamaha, and now a 60hp 4 stroke Merc. All have been excellent until the current Merc which has internal corrosion problems at 6/7 years old, 260 hours, reaction from Mercury Australia has been very poor, in my opinion, so they've lost me.
Other than that my knowledge is limited, I believe the Yamaha is a very similar motor. You can get a lemon in any brand, it's the backup that counts and Merc's is lacking. I haven't had an issue elsewhere so I can't judge therefore I didn't vote. Who backs there product up the best, I think would be a better poll question.

Cheers Dids

So far my favourite is the trusty Yammie, 4str 60hp, great on fuel, quiet and starts first time every time. but I've only had mercury 2str to compare to. Next boat will have a yammie or suzi, depending on deal, weights, output etc, but am fully converted to the quiet reliable 4 str.

Totally agree. 2008 Yamaha 4 Stroke 60 EFI for me. Made in Japan. Quality engineering, low emissions and low fuel consumption. Do your bit for the planet and go with one of these. 4 cylinder as well. Just beautiful to own and use.

It's funny if you had this poll twenty years ago it would have been a battle between Mercury and Evinrude. Yammie wins the poll today. Twenty years from now it will be some Chinese brand we haven't heard of yet.

The Yammie 60 efi 4st is a ripper. Have owned one for 3 years now and it just gets better and better. Quiet, great on fuel and as reliable as my wifes Camry. Nice to know there's something on the back you can depend on!
