Hi there,

Just wondering if any one knows of anywhere I can hire a comfortable boat to take off shore fishing, self skippered?

I know there are a few self drive rigs to 24ft I have seen, but they are all conditioned to smooth or partially smooth water so far...

I know you can hire centre consoles in sydney that you can take out through the heads.... just wish I could find one here in QLD.

Brisbane or Gold Coast would be fine.

Cheers,

Brad.

No
Was looking for the same thing but only come up with the same answer as you.
I'm located on the sunshine coast and there is nothing more than river boats with small HP outboards that require no licence to drive. I also looked around the Harvey bay area and there is no bigger or faster boats available for hire.
If you could hire a 5-6m boat with a decent hp outboard to push it along at a fast pace i'd hire one even just to do the creeks. At this stage i'd have to drive to Brisbane to tow one back up here.
Mooloolaba has a safe crossing out to sea with no bar to cross, but you can't leagally take these hire craft out of the river up here.

Interesting you should ask....

It is a concept I have been toying with, but haven't fully researched the survey and insurance side of it yet.

I am sure the red tape of survey and insurance will create some problems that will affect the viability v's pricing issue.

If a 5.5 - 6.0m boat was available, what do you think it would be worth to hire for a day?

Keep in mind it would have all the latest electronics, VHF, safety gear, ice boxes, game poles, cutting board, hydraulic steering etc etc etc.

Cheers

Pete

these guys allow 5 nm.
there must be insurance issues with it.
to be able to do it i think priceing would kill any market.
be a great concept though.

Hey Lippa;

Thanks for responding..

Boab boat company (the link you provided) are located in NSW and WA only.

I need it in SE QLD.

Pricing isnt that bad... a 6.5m plate centre console for $345/ day. Divided between 4 mates thats around 85 dollars each...

Hi Pete;

I think there is a very big market for this. Very big indeed. I have used a similar company in Sydney out of Cockle Bay, and they hire 7m plate centre consoles. I didnt organise it (a mate did) so I cant remember cost, but I know we couldnt get a w/end for months and had to go mid week.

There are several companies I have found in NSW, WA and VIC so it isnt impossible. Most limit you to 5nm off shore. I have no idea what that "magical distance" represents - but I suggest it is something to do with insurance underwriting.

Today, more and more people are living in high density living, with no storage facility for a boat.

Most people who own an offshore boat use it around once a month on average. To work out initial outlay, depreciation, wear and tear, storage, servicing, insurance, time cleaning and I could go on - the actual cost per trip would be, I suggest, around the thousand dollar mark. Sit down and do the maths - it is scarey!

So what is a day hire worth? Well I can go on a walk on, walk off charter for $160 here on Gold Coast, and have their GPS marks from 20+ years locak experience. That includes bait, gear, fuel, lunch, cleaning etc.

SO.... If I think for a 6m plate boat, which you can fish 4 out of very comfortably, around $100.00 each - so $400.00 is reasonable.

Of course, this boat would have to have a GPS capable of entering marks that hirers have etc, as well as a fish finder.

A tow away service - I would insist on the hirer cleaning the boat (I would flush the motor regardless to make sure its done) - or charge them a fee for a returned boat thats not as clean as when they took it.

Maybe a venture where you offer deals - like a day is 400 - but a fri and sat is 600 (or sun and mon) - this way you could be pretty much certain your rig would be hired from Fri to mon to earn you $1200.00. Repayments and insurance and upkeep say 600.00 which should leave you 600 per vessel. Of course you would do slightly cheaper mid week (tue - thur) hire too, at say 250 - 300.

I think it could be VERY popular.

Guys this company is starting up in SEQ VERY shortly :)

They had there launch on friday at the sundale bridge, where "Roy" picked up his new AMARRA plate boat.. with all the works and jerks::) I have the SEQ service contract with them and they are looking to be up and running in QLD very soon.

Boab boat hire national comapny owner has 140 applications fro franchises on his desk so this concept seems to be a winner8-)

In that case - I am extreemly happy!

Any idea on time frame for the first one to be up and running?

Brad.

These guys seem to allow offshore use on some of their fleet!?

http://www.piratewatersboathire.com.au/faq-boathireinbrisbane

"Where can I go? Different boats in our fleet have different areas of operation. All can go anywhere in Moreton bay through to the Gold Coast. Our larger cuddy cabins will enable you to get offshore. To ensure saftey we arrange an advanced boat handling course to give you the skills needed to operate the boat safely and with confidence."

Cheers

Thanks so much for the post Garry.... Very exciting!

Just found another company that is already doing it - but their web site is a little confusing on how it all works.

Unless Goodna's now become part of NSW or WA (which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing :) ), you're incorrect. I once bought a tinnie off the bloke who runs it when they were previously located at Rocklea - I didn't cross any borders on that occasion either :-)

I did have a look at the FAQ's, and it says partially smooth waters - the boat's are definitely capable looking though.

Hi - We will be on the Gold Coast (Surfers Paradise) by the end of August, with a Kimberley - great fishing boat - which you can either walk straight on board or tow to the your destination. Sports Rider to follow & soon after a centre cab. Check the website for more info:

Happy fishing - hopefully see you soon.

Cant wait for it! How long before you have the centre cab available for off shore hire?

The pirate hire place has a good idea, 6 days of hire, cost a bit over 2k, if that was spread across the year, might work for some..

Thought you guys (Boab) must have been starting up here soon, have seen the boats puttering around at the bridge a few days last week.

Man you must have jumped through some hoops to get the insurance guys to cover outside use.

Mick.
