hi all, just got me a 3.1m punt for the dam and up the creeks etc, have never owned a boat this small so i need advice on outboard to suit,

I'm gunna put a lightweight deck up the front and a minn kota and battery too.

what size outboard will bring this kind of rig on to the plane with just me and the above??

am looking at cheap second hand.

i want to keep it small as possible that will do the job.

and what weight do these motors come to?

thanks in advance guys.

while I'm here, what sizes get the tank in the top?

I Had a 15 on a 3.7 and it went real well withthe same sort of gear + a 20ltr fuel tank and a 20lt livey bucket, you might get away with a 9-10hp ..if you are likely to add a bit of stuff or take a second guy get a 15hp

G'day

Anything from a 6 up...... if you're after an onboard fuel tank, a 4 would probably do it, but you will appreciate a 6 better, a 9.9 will get that rig moving real well

My father inlaw has a 3.7 with a 9.9 and its gets up on the plane with two of us no dramas. i have also been in a 10 foot v nose punt that had a early 90s model 6hp tohatsu on the back it got up on the plane with two 80kg blokes, but it did take a bit.
Check to see if your hull has a max hp rating on it.

So i would say newer 6 or 7.5.

a lot depends on how heavy you are, I've got a 4hp on an inflatable and it planes easily with one person in it not a hope with two

bout 75kg, By the time i add a leccy, batt and deck ETC i might be pushing 120 kg total weight

the real problem is having to buy one to see if its enough.

I have a 3m jap punt that i use for bass electrics, decked all out with a 55lb bowmount, 120ah batt, sounder with another batt, live well in front.
boat weight only 50kg. with all the gear 100kg, plus me another 100kg. All up 200kgs, i started with a 3hp, just not on the plane, so i got a 4hp 2stroke yam with builtin fuel tank, and that gets me up and moving. No speedester but gets me there and brings me back. To be safe mate, i would look at a 4/5hp.

From memory I think a 9.9 is the same weight as a 15, so you might as well have the extra power. You might conceivably buy a little bigger hull in the future, and if you have a suitable motor already it will save you from buying one later on. If you're going to consider the 15, I've found the 15HP 2 stroke Mercury, (American) is a top little motor.
