going down to yamba fishing been going there for years what are the rules down there with epirbs on a real flat day we were going to go and fish lovers point out of boat i now you have to have on life jacket on when crossing bar but on nsw maine site it says 2 miles off shore here in qld it is open waters any help would be great would only go out on flat day

if your going out 2 miles offshore your going to need an epirb regardless of how flat it is

i know that what i wanted to know is that as soon as i get out side of the bar down there do i have to carry a epirb even if i am not going 2 miles offshore

If its 2nm or more than yes you need one, but if within the 2nm limit, you don't require one by regulation, but is still a bit of extra safety for you and your crew.

Rememberv your flares and a V sheet too. Cost me $80 down South West Rocks one year because I thought the 2nm applied to these items as well.:-[

An EPIRB is compulsory in NSW only if your boat is over 8m.
The NSW Maritime boating handbook says an EPIRB is: "...complusory (sic) for all vessels 8m or more in length operating more than 2 nautical miles from the shore. However, it is recommended that all vessels venturing offshore carry an EPIRB."
However, the handbook also states: "Marine radios are compulsory for all vessels operating more than 2 nautical miles out to sea, and are recommended for anyone proceeding offshore."
27MHz or VHF, it's your choice, but they'll bust you if you don't have one and it makes safety sense to log on and off with local Coast Guard.

also dont forget NSW has different rules for the flare kits, you will need parachute flares as well.
