Can someone please help me out or give me some ideas of a Good blue water jig combo i think i am leaning to Spin reel as i already have a few overheads that seem to bulky for jigging.

I'm currently considering the same question and leaning toward an Egrell "Popper" Bear which is rated to 4 1/2 oz, but a mate has one and regularly swings a 300gram knife jig off it. I'm going to match it to a 760 penn slammer loaded with 24kg sufix matrix pro jigging braid. You'll get around 14kg of drag out of the 760 and to get more you'd be up in the high end 12000-16000 Stella/satliga and spending around a motza.

I used a 760 slammer on a recent trip to the swains and it performed admirably resulting in some xos spaniards and rainbow runners being landed

Cheers

Rhys

Good luck

Keep in mind that the rod doesn’t have to be expensive as it only has to bend downwards and not break.

Well i give me gear a fairly hard time and dont mind spending a bit extra to get the quality i have been looking at the Stellas and have found that i can get a 10000 for $700 delivered to my door from the states. $350 savings. $350 thats the price for a great jigging and popping rod

ctwaddle, the Stella 10000 is a purpose Popping rod with the high ratio, a Stella 20000 is the Jiggers reel as well it has the larger spool. The FA series is being run out so there will be bargains around.

I can get a Stella 10000 for $720 shipped to Australia. I intend to use to outfit alos for popping so i think i may stick to the 10000 over the 20000.

Well if jigging and popper fishing is the go, you'd be hard pressed to find a more purpose built rod than the popper Bear grell rod and at around $350ish yo're in, the 10000 stellar would match it nicely, Birdy has matched his to an 8000stella and its a lovely outfit

The Stella 10000 will be to big for the Poppa BeaR which is only a 10-15kg rated rod, it is far more suited to a 6000-8000 reel. The St10k is ok for 50lb but suited for 80lb+.

I reckon you're all nuts! I've tried jigging a couple of times on Wags' gear (can't tell you what it is but it's nice) and, having had my shoulder done a couple of years ago, I'm out after two drops...

I do a fair bit of weights work on the shoulder, but it doesn't seem to be helping re jigging. Technique is likely to be an issue, so I might hassle Revs57 to come out and show me. Wags goes toooooo haaaaaaard!!!!;D;D;D

Cheers,

Tim

kind of funny how jigging has become new and fashionable, I reckon before I went out and spent a grand or two on a jigging outfit, I would be giving it a try with some gear I already owned, it is hard work and it is not for everyone and every location, it can be rewarding, but unless you live in the sort of area that is good for jigging, it can be dull and boring and tiring as Timiboy points out, sure new good gear is great to use, don't deny that, but far better to "try before you buy" when so many Dollars are involved (I reckon anyway)

But if the tackle that you already have is not right fo the job that you are trying to do you might find that it is less productive, This combo will be not only used for Jigging and Bottom Bashing. I live in Cairns and fish most of the Cape every year so i can use this combo around markers and other surface structure for fish up to bait fishing in the deeper holes for Black dew fish. However i cannot use the TLD that i already have to flick poppers or plastic jigs as i am unable to cast the overhead.

yep, OK then, probably a good quality Spinning reel will fit the Bill then, if you think it will become a regular pastime, then you could go more upmarket and specialised, for starters and incase you do not take to it, a common old Penn Spinfisher will see you right, may not be as good as the top line gear, but very strong and simple to fix/modify/maintain and cheap to buy, the new Chinese ones seem to be holding up, I know a Charter guy that has them, 50LB Braid, stiff rods, tight as it will go drags and they are still working well after about a season a torture.

I have just had a look at the Shimano Saragosa i think they are spelt and they are great real, GTP how do you think these reels will stand up compaired to the Stellas? Is there a Rod that could be used with Poppers, Stickbaits and also used for bottom fishing or would i be better off getting two rods?
