Hi all,
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to replace the steering helm on a single cable teleflex system without having to change the cable as well. My steering helm has gone awol but the cable and everything else is fine. Also can someone please tell me how i remove the cable from the old helm unit and reinstall it on the new one if it is possible to do so. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks Roscoe.

It will depend on the type of helm you have, be it a Morse D290 etc.

Chances are yes you will be able to change just the helm. Helms are about $100.

Most of them will have 2 bolts where the cable goes in (at the top). Undo and remove the top bolt (this bolt actually locks the cable into place) then turn the steering wheel to starboard (clockwise) and it will wind out the cable from the helm.

Reassembly is the reverse of installation.

Getting the steering wheel off is usually the biggest hassle. Undo the centre nut but leave it on bya turn or so and then you will likely need mega pulling pressure. I use a hand at 9 o'clock and one and 3 o'clock abd then yank hard alternating one hand then the other. This usually works.

If its a quick connect helm then you will have a little metal pin sticking out of the helm (like a pin with a loop in it). Thi spin pokes into a hole and unlocks the cable from the helm.

Cheers
