View Full Version : Southwind SR565
Hi All,
I'm looking for a boat for the family but still something that I can do some fishing in with a moderate price range. A Southwind SR565 was suggested to me and may be within budget. Anyone know what kind of range I could expect out of one of these with a 100ltr tank and a 2000 model 130hp yammy on it?
The banks area from mooloolabah is probably my most visited spot so 45-65klm out. Probably about 160-180K on a regular trip I guess.
The family days are just in the bay and over to moreton from Scarborough so shouldn't be an issue.
Anyone have anything good or bad to say about these boats?
Thanks,
Matt.

You might need a bit more than 100litres. My 115 sucks about a1 litre per km offshore in average conditions but a bit better in the bay.
Thanks Lump, your boat looks a bit bigger in your avitar so fingers crossed I do a little bit better. Ended up buying it so I'll find out I guess. I think the first mod will be to try to fit a reserve tank in it..

Hey Matt
I have an SF 565 with a 115 Yammy 2 stroke and as said above it sucks about 1l/km offshore and a bit better in the sweet spot in calmer conditions. Just remember these boats are not really 5.65m, but more so about 5.4m in reality and are "small" in the water say next to a 565 Haines etc. I use mine offshore a bit, but with the distances you are talking and the potential for it to blow up that wide with an ugly trip home, they really are a bit on the small side to feel confident in bad conditions. Great boat otherwise
Cheers

Matt,
I had a yammy 130, late 06 model on the same boat as Lumps, in medium offshore conditions you can expect to use 1 ltr per k.
The Yalta 555HC is 5.55 meters, 6.0 mtr OAL and probly a bit lighter than the hull you have. I have a 150ltr tank and changed the engine to solve my range issue.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the other guys are both spot on with fuel consumption.

AMy last boat was a 4.75 top ender with 80hp 4 stroke and apart from the fact that it leaked like a seive, it felt safe enough out there if you picked your days. When it does blow up, it just makes for a slow trip home I guess. Having said that, the SR565 should feel like a giant out there in comparison. ;D
That is some pretty horrendous fuel consumption considering I was closer to 2km/l with my last rig.
I wasn't able to get a look under the floor, is there room for a reserve do you know? I think the SF 565 has another 20litres in the fuel tank from memory. I don't pick it up for another week unfortunately. I think the SF 565 has a kill tank underfloor as well which the SR 565 doesn't.
______
Just caught your post Honda, I may have to stay in a bit closer to shore for now and look at an engine change at some point as well by the looks of it. I factored for it in the purchase at least..
Thanks,
Matt.

Yes the SF has a 120l tank. Mine was replaced under warranty and when they had the floor open, the tank sat snug between stringers. As you mention the SF has a useless kill tank that you may sneak another tank in lieu of with the SR, but one thing I would think and depending on tank size may start to put a fair bit of weight forward. I store a bit of gear in the cuddy of the SF and it just does not like weight up there and hard to keep well trimmed offshore - wants to dunk the nose all the time. I would use 2 x 25l tubs that can be moved around for trim and also provide an independent fuel supply if things go wrong with the main tank - put a Yammy barb into the system before the water separator and connect as needed . The fuel filler on the SF is in the outboard well and difficult to dump fuel into in a pitching sea.

AGood info - thanks Age, I might just do that. I would like to keep them out of the way is the only thing and not a lot of room left over at the back once you get a couple of batteries in there. When I get it, I'll fill a couple of sand bags and see what effect the extra weight has.
Cheers,
Matt.
