Hi Horrible,

there are quite a few sites for Fish ID (see links below) but it depends on your level of experience. For the extensive and detailed sites you need to be able to narrow down the possibilities a fair bit first, otherwise there are literally 1,000s of fish listed and it would take for ever to go through them.

For basic identification of commonly caught species or to start narrowing down the possibilities try these ones;

http://www.fishvictoria.com/the-fish/marine-&-estuarine-fin-fish/fish-id-at-a-glance/

http://www.sportfishingscene.com.au/fishID.htm

http://archive.amol.org.au/collection/hostedwebs/fish/key/couplet0.htm

http://www.kirradive.com/courses/aware_fish_id

http://www.cwmb.sa.gov.au/kwc/programs/something_fishy/fish_id_result19.htm

If you have some idea of what you are looking for these sites have extensive databases mostly with photos;

http://www.fishbase.org/search.php

http://www.amonline.net.au/fishes/identify/index.cfm

I also can't praise Grant's Guide to Fishes enough as a great reference book and a must have for any keen fisho.

Cheers

Dave

Edit, I missed copying this link for the Qld DPI Fish web site;

I can vouch for fishbase.org, it's a godsend because it has multiple photos of each species. This makes it particularly good for identifying reef fish which have a lot of colour variations within a single species.
