Being a newbie to fishing I've randomly selected a range of takle to do a bit of shore fishing and boat fishing off the Yeppoon coast, Causeway Lake and the two bays.

I was wondering if I was missing some essential takle from the old box. I have so far:

* 2 x 4-6kg rod with 8kg of line for shore fishing
* 1 x 10-15kg rod with 20kg line and overhead reel
* 1 x 10-15kg rod with 20kg line and 6000series eggbeater
* 2 x knifes, scaler, cutting board , bucket, ruler etc
* small selection of various sized hooks
* small selection of various sized sinkers
* small selection of various sized swivels
* about 1/2 dozen 30cm wire tracers
* metal slugs in about 15/20g, 40g and 80/100g
* 4 various (small and medium) diving lures
* a couple of those red/white floats

Sorry I don't know what sizes the hooks, sinkers and swivels are...I havn't got a chart to compare the sizes - they were just thrown into compartments of my tackle box.

Cheers

Mono & Fluorocarbon leaders ....... You need the leader ( 6 foot approx) to go from the mainline to your hooks ....... this is for abrasion resistance
20 , 40 & 60lb should cover normal fishing situations !

Then learn the best knot to connect them!

A decent set of fishing plier's,they'll save your finger's and make hook removel so much easier and some split ring plier's.Also a some type of lip grip,i have boga's but some of the cheaper one's are okay like the shimano type.

Thanks Nagg for responding,

Are tracers not suitable for the same purpose? Or are leaders stronger than traces?

Pete

Pete ....... The only time you should use really need a wire trace is if you are fishing for toothy criters ( mackeral , wahoo)
Wire tends to spook fish while a leader is less likely to do so.
as far as strength go ..... you can get both light & heavy in both wire & mono/FC

I would spool one of your 4-6kg setups with 4 or 6kg line, sometimes a lighter line will get a lot more results for you.

You will also do well there with livebait so some method of catching them and keeping them will be a big plus.

Hi Bilopete,
Dan 5 has given you great advice on what I rate as probably the most valuable bit of kit i carry.My pliers.

I always take two sets.One being longnosed for fish handling,And the other is my Leatherman Wave.My Leatherman has proved itself to be priceless on many occassions,I simply don't leave home without it.

And without trying to sound like your Mother or anything,Not even sure if this is classed as tackle?But I also consider it to be a manditory item.....First aid kit.....

Take the time to find a decent one and don't skimp.Another item that is invaluable when needed.....

Any Yabbies up Yeppoon way? You could get a yabbie pump to get free bait.
