As the title suggests, we planned about 8 weeks ago to have the friday off and head out to the hards. Weather shaped up very nicely with no chop and a rolling swell. Headed out to the bait grounds to load up on XOS slimies.
Hit the hards around 1:30pm, scouted around drifting a couple of marks, and settled on the best show. Was very slow going until the dusk period with only mixed reefies and unders coming in.
Had a livie and floaters out, couple of taps on my floater and i strike to set the hooks. 5m off the back a 2.5m sail explodes from the water. Took us 10 seconds to realise that it was on the end of the floater and it was on with an aerial display like no other. The line went slack and i thought we had lost him as i was winding as fast as i could. 15m from the boat the sail explodes again from the water eyeing us off and aiming straight for us in the boat. Dan dives for the cabin, Cameron's thinking of jumping overboard and i'm thinking i'm about the pointy end of this very green sail in the boat and with a 'thud' he hits the boat with his bill and dives away. We gather our nerves circumnavigate the boat, 30-40 jumps later and we have him boatside and with some boatside stuffing around by us, the 50lb line fails just before we grab his bill. So we counted this as my first sail.;D 8-)
Stayed there til after dark landing squire, AJ's, and reefies. Travelled to the banks and anchored up on a very nice show. Landed my PB cod, a nice snapper and couple of pearlies for variety. Back to the ramp 1am Saturday.
