Best not to grease them as it creates problems.

Spot on Jimbo, grease compacts until you can't push the shaft through it best to use inox or something similar... Guys like BM and Spaniard King will know
Scott
Clean the shaft after each outing and then some light oil or inox etc and you will be fine.
Over time corrosion will build in the tilt tube and eventually start grabbing the cable. To remedy this remove the cable and run a 5/8 drill bit through the tilt tube.

Hi reelchippy
mate if you use grease it will create problems I use diesel oil on the steering shaft or normal car oil have never had a problem since doing things this way.
just pull motor around till arm is fully exposed then place oil on shaft and move side to side repeat action till steering feels free and every now and then remove cable from behind box an place a little oil down the cable this will prevent shifting and cable spurs from the continuing rubbing all preventive maintenance.
Cheers
