Hi guys,

I was wondering what type of gear do you use for offshore reef fishing i.e. overhead/spinning reel, mono/braid, line class? I have read all about the craze of catching Snapper, etc on plastics but, I have also noticed that alot of guys still fish bait (mainly floaters), and do very well as a result.

Cheers,

James

which particular reefs and what species are you targeting?

as reggy said it depends mainly on what reefs and the depth of water u are goin to be fishing shallow reefs we use spinners or even the old alvey reels for ppl that we take out that dont have rods. and the deep water reefs such as deep tempest we have big overhead reels.

As I'm still yet to fish offshore (don't own a boat), I don't know how deep the water is but, I want something that can handle some decent Snapper. Something that is sensitive to fish with yet, powerful enough to actually land the fish. Also, which is better, mono or braid and what line class?

Cheers,

James

G'day sp,

We use a variety of gear for snapper offshore so bear with me

Penn Pro guide 2-4kg 7' matched to a penn affinity 2500 loaded with 8kg sufix performance braid tipped with 2 mts 6-8 kg fluro to use with plactics and 1/4-3/4 oz jig heads in 20-40mts

Penn Proguide 2-4kg 7' matched to a penn 360 slammer loaded with 10 kg sufix performance tipped with 2mts 8-10kg fluro to use with 1/2 -1 oz jig head in 30-60 mts

Rapala braid concept 7' 8-12kg matched to penn 460 liveliner slammer loaded with 15kg sufix performance topped with 6mts 10 kg fluro for 5/8-1 1/2 oz jig heads in 30-70mts.

Egrell s10 7' matched with penn 560 liveliner slammer loaded with 15kg sufix performance topped with 6mts 10kg fluro for 1/2 - 1 1/2 oz jig heads in 30-70mts and floating pillies down a berley trail.

Penn power spin 7' medium 6-10kg matched to penn 850 spin fisher to float pillies and other tasty delights down a berley tril in whatever depth you like

Angler js 780 matched to penn GLS 45 loaded with 24kg sufix performance for floating and bottom bouncing.

Custom built 15-25 kg braid buster matched to Penn TRQ300 loaded with 24kg sufix matrix pro jigging braid for floatlineing, live baiting, jigging and trolling

2 Wilson live fibres 15-24kg zws70xj's matched to TLD 25's with turnos handles, one loaded with 37 kg frog jigging braid, the other loaded with 46kg frog jigging braid, these can be used for just about anything.

I like to have the bases covered...(Read - just a tackle junkie!)

The options are endless and all depends on the depth of your pockets.

As you can see I prefer braid. More sensitivity, less stretch and less "belly" in the line means greater connection to what is happening at the hook end. For snapper somewhere in the 10-15kg mark is just about right IMO but sometimes you need to go lighter when the fish are finnicky.

A couple of good budget outfit to consider would be a penn spinfisher combo - around the 750-850 size or a 560 slammer combo.

Hope this is helpful

cheers

Rhys
