Isn't it jast attached to the winch hub by a single screw through the strap to the winch drum. I bet it's rusted to buggery though just to make it difficuilt to get out.

No the wire was slotted between two hole that are drilled through the upwrite disc that is at ninety degrees to the drum.If that makes sense

Are then your going to have to drill and tap a screw in to hold the new strap on the drum.

I did the conversion to webbing two years ago, did the conversion to Spctra rope 2 months ago, definitely not going back!

I just ditched my webbing & installed spectra rope. It's tops.
Webbing will be a pain unless your winch is true & square with the centre line of the trailer. If the webbing doesn't go on straight it will fold on itself - this sucks if you are retrieving solo.
To answer your question, my the end of my webbing was folded over & sat in a slot the width of the spool. Had to cut it to remove. It looks like the winch manufacturers are all going with webbing these days.
I think it would be ok to secure your new webbing with four screws along the igth of the spool.

I had the same problem as you so it is likely you have an older winch (mine is 11 years old) The only way I could fasten the webbing is to do what Dantren and Roughasguts suggested and that was to use tap screws to drill the end of the webbing into the winch hub.
I found the winch hub was too small and solid to screw into and so I ended up taken the strap back and exchanging it for the trusty cable.
The new cable is working fine but I have a fear that one day the cable will flick back into my face / body so I am now interested in the spectra rope.
Good luck!

I think it was about $40-$50 at BIAS.
