The forecast was great this weekend so I decided on a solo trip to the reefs wide of Mission Beach for some long awaited fun and to restock the dwindling supplies in the freezer..
I was planning to leave early yesterday but I messed up the wake up call and didn't get away till later but as I planned to spend the night out it was no big deal.

Anyway the weather was great, very little run with the neap tides though and I had to work hard to get the fish...the red emporers continue to elude me which remains a real source of frustration...http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/sad.gif

I didn't land a fish during the night as I obviously anchored up over "Shark Alley" and I'm not to keen on anchor retrieval in the dark by myself so I got a great nights sleep anyway.

Woke up to another beautiful day, bagged out pretty soon on largemouth nannies and Trout and decided to call it a dayhttp://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/smiley.gif.

Remember reading you were heading out, I had to drive to Townsville this morning and I was green as hell thinking of you out there as I passed thru El arish then as I went through Cardwell and saw the water was glass I was positively spewing!

Great catch Scott and well earned considering how long you have been waiting.

Half your luck.

Well sorry Shane...and thanks Outsider1....it looks like I have been doing my bit for nannigai conservation over the past year or so.
I have been throwing them back or moving on after I catch 5......hmmm....a genius I am not.http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/lipsrsealed.gif

and outsider I was well aware of the trout limit...unfortunately I'm not only a little dumb but not so hot at counting either.http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/embarassed.gif

Shame on you Scott! thought for sure you would have done the associate diploma in QLD recreational fishing, it's only $1500, 2 years with a forced refresher every 3 as the regulations and the idiology are abstract so cannot be relied on....next intake possibly?:(

lol..Scott.
Yes I think I need to sign up for the first semester immediately.
Though I think I might sign up for the 3 year Degree program as it's said to give a fuller understanding of becoming a successful recreational angler.

After a second look, i could go either way. Appears to be a slight concave look to the head on some of them, though its hard to tell from that photo. Either way, they are all red.

I stand corrected. Large Mouth it is.. Now all you need to sort is your bag limits eh Scott? To tell the truth, i hade been working on seven nannygai till just recently. Dont know how many fish i had not bought home because of it.

Its terms used more so by the north qld commercial sector. But many of the names given are used and refered to by the local rec fishers.
When filling in paper work on catches and filling in the older log books it was easier to refer to many fish by a shorter name thus instead of saying i have 50kg's of large mouth nannygai, buyers and log books refered to them as 50kg's of silvers.
Small mouth- blacks
Red Emperor- reds
Spangled emperor-greys
Red throat emperor-RTE
Etc, etc.
We as fishers are awful for having alot of different names for the same species, look at the Lutjanus malabaricus known as
Silvers
Large mouth nannygai
Large mouth sea perch
saddle tail sea perch
red jew
scarlet sea perch
all are the same fish ...foxy

Damn nice catch there mate!

We drove back from Port Douglas today, and the water was so flat the whole way. I even remember driving through El Arish... Didn't remember on the way up so much as the beer was flowing quite quickly ;)

Dave we just finished out last portion of trout last week (had to resort to eating nanny's and spanish) so it was great to get a few kilos of fillets to portion up and freeze...I asked a fishmonger at the markets on sunday her trout fillet price just out of interest ...well when she said it would cost me $38 a KG I just about fell overhttp://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/shocked.gif.
