Has anyone had success with a prop change. I have a 6m glass open boat on the way with a 115 E-TEC. As I am in a remote area I thought of getting a more suitable prop for the E-TEC from the word go. Any ideas about suitable prop dimensions?

Viper II is what you want to get then..... There a great all round prop with exellant hole shot, mid range and top speed....

Not sure what pitch would be optimiun, but I think a 17" would be a good starting point...

If you decide to get the Viper II, make sure the dealer does not get you the Viper I.... To look at, there are subtle differances between then. But on the water there like chalk and cheese

Hi mnorl2

Viper is a good prop but from what I understand it needs to be run deeper than the Rakers that I have fitted to my two 115HPs They are the Raker 1s so not sure how much better, different the Raker 2s are.

The Raker 1s, I was told by Lindsay Fry of Seafarer, can be run higher and can almost be surface piercing props. I lifted my motors right up when I got the boat and it did make a positive difference.

I guess it depends just what you want from your prop and how you are going to use the boat but mine gives me good fuel economy / hr and about 40 + kn speed form carby Ocean Pros not Etecs but they are the exact same motor except for the fuel delivery system;

When the need for speed takes hold which, with a 6.2 heavy Vagabond, is less frequent as I head to the new "40s" the Rakers seem pretty good.

Hole shot is fine with two even with 13.25" x 20" pitch

Also consider trim tabs as there are not too many boat that won't benefit from them. I also have foils that were fitted first and where also useful but here again whi you motor lifted, as you can with rakers, the foils are on the water surface or above it when you are at faster speed so there is no extra drag which can be a factor if the foils stay below the surface when you are at speed.

The full story ie props, foils, tabs etc starts to look more and more an hollistic issue when you get into it.;)

What is the main use intended for the boat?

Pics of Raker 1 etc below

Good luck with it

Cheers

Mnorl2,

Best Idea would be to contact the manufacturer of the boat and ask them:o Guys on here can only give an opinion and are quite often far from correct::)

Each hull will work differently from another so only those with your setup could possibly come close to an answer for you. Your hull could be anywhere from 500kgs to 1100kg's so for anyone to recommend a prop without knowing the true facts has know idea what there on about::)

Talk to the manufacturer, they would no doubt have done some trials nest best thing is to either contact a prop specialist like solas for there recomendation..ya don't have to buy from them;) or PM FNQ;D

Yes Mate what you are saying makes good sense. My manufacturer is very approachable and easy to talk to, but I often miss him. I will have a yarn to him and find out more. Thank you and Cheers.

Hi Matt

I got an email from BRP that includes all their props so thought you might be interested. http://shop.evinrude.com/dyn_prodlist.php?k=83710

Just pick the prop from the left side for the others ie Viper, Renegade etc

Cheers

Gee thanks Gary, read the first, then read the last -then read the first! then read the first again....;D

I still cannot get my head around the 'It's OK to run your E-Tec engine at 5100 WOT' guff from the manufacturers dealer network, leaves nowhere to go and an average boat on the water forever:(

Hi Matt, just be careful picking a new and improved prop that is not based on your particular setup at the present time. Props do not care what engine they are on the job they have to do is the same regardless, they do care what hull as characteristics change.

If you ring around have your max rpm and speed numbers ready and the serial number of the prop you are using to save time finding a prop option that may suit you better.

Hi FNQ et al

I posted earlier re Rakers which I have and I thought they were 13.25" dia but reading the BRP details (http://shop.evinrude.com/dyn_prodlist.php?k=83710) they say they are now 13.5"dia.

Do you know if the Raker 1 and Raker 2 have different diameters?

I might have to go and have another look at my props too.

Cheers

Chimo I don't think the diameter has changed but these props are outside of my personal use these days so I don't keep up:-/

Hmm more complications. Don't think I even want to go there.

Original SSP 13 3/8 x 17 on mine , pulls 43kns at around 5400, never tried pushing the throttle further, but it does go further.

Qns. Can you over rev a boat engine , or does the ECU stop that ?

datamile,

Your engine is protected by an over rev limiter which ensures you cant over rev and damage the engine.
Thought someone would have got back to you on this:-/

Thanks.. Tested today... lever goes further but rpm says around 5400.

Nice and smooth today, but the wind is getting up now. Could example to the family that we took out today of how quickly conditions in the bay can change.
