Why am I not amazed??

Am I getting too used to the idiot percentage of the population getting all the coverage and nothing seems serious anymore??

Ten years ago this would have been quite newsworthy......why is it not these days? Same as the road toll and accidents on the roads, now its an everyday event nobody bats an eyelid.

I sure hope the thrill of catching fish will never go that way for me.

Jack.

Crikey. Not good!
I wonder if the owner will buy any of the 6" x 4" prints for 15c from that page? :/

yeah strange - that was my first impression from watching.

assuming the outboards were able to fire, I would be moving at a great rate of knots to the shore.
also, never saw anyone swimming to put the bungs in.

Years ago when we used to ski every weekend we were up at somerset and my mate put the boat in and of we go down the other end for a barefoot session , while out their having a ski i have fallen off so he is motoring back to pick me up then he realizes no bungs in the boat and the water is rising so he takes of as fast as he can drove around for ten minutes to get the tide out of the boat and reached over the back and to his surprise the bungs were there but not screwed in ,screwed them in then back to skiing but boy it could get ugly if you make bad discissions . ......matt

Very surprising not to see anyone trying to bail the water manually. Unfortunate circumstances. I bet they won't do that again....

Gee I dunno that looked like a pretty expensive boat going under there. One would have to imagine the bloke who was in charge of it (possibly the owner) has got more money than brains. As mentioned above, no-one swimming to put bungs in, no-one bailing water out, looks like the boat has a raised deck so the water may have been under floor or something like that and last of all what happened to any flotation that boats that size are supposed to have. poor peeps!!

Also looks like it may be down the gold coast from those buildings in the background and yes as said earlier why not ive it full blast and get to shore quick smart, Maybe the batterie's had copped water under floor!!

What a shocker. That is one mistake that the owner is never likely to repeat. I always run through a checklist of things before I even tow the boat out of the yard which of course includes bungs. And then I double check when I arrive at the ramp. I don't want that happening to me ever. I too was amazed to see that the photos are all of him in that same area indicating that he was just idling around. If that were me I would have gunned the engines flat out and headed in to the nearest beach and beached it, then popped the bungs in and pumped the water out. That was one expensive mistake on the owners part but I have to feel sorry for the poor bugger.

Did anyone notice the date on the file 4/1/08 yanks reverse their day/month so I guess takes a fool to make a mistake on "April Fools Day". Photos look like they were taken in USA, probably Florida, look at the boats, they don't have Aust Registration numbers displayed on the hulls. Skipper seemed more interested in keeping his feet dry than saving his boat. nothing like a "once a year skipper".

Though with a babe in a bikini on the bow, at least he sank in style.http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/tongue.gif

there is something fishy about that series of photos,

in the first few frames, there are alot of boats around all anchored, none fishing.
what encouraged the photographer to start taking pictures? the first photo, the boat doesnt look too bad?
Second or third photo - shows people in the water swimming, a long way from shore.
Why are there so many boats together? none of them have fishing rods out and most are anchored.
Why didnt the coast guard tell the boat to make a run to the beach, which looks only a couple of k's away? in the background.
why didnt we get a better close up of the chick on the front of the boat? ;)Regards

Honda900-----one word---- Yanks!!!!!

When they have things like the spring break etc, they all put their boats in the water and congregate together. I think they just don't get it!!! Your on the water, put a bloody line in it!!! Guess it must be an Aussie thing.

Yeah thats it, two speed boaties... when parked its look at how pretty my hull is and oooo don't you have a big and loud stereo, the other speed is then wide flatout till stopped again and ooooo thats a lot of very bright SS you have.....
Strange bunch but with a population as big as theirs there is always a like minded gaggle nearby.

AS far as bailing - you probably couldn't because of the sealed floor?

Would have filled up under the floor though - which is why she tipped on her sde and didn't slide under bum first.

Still, can't understand the motors being trimmed right out. I can't believe that he thought he would be able to keep them high 'n dry!::)

Very strange to say the least.

Maybe there were just far to many Americans offering their advice:-/

The outboards make sense. When a battery shorts with water the hydraulics let go, the motor, anchor winch and anything else you can think of lets go, and the motors go up and the winch drops the anchor (trust me I've seen it)
You'd think just gun it for the shore and empty the water out!

hmm nice photos mate the first thing i remember when going on the boat is the bungs.

I wouldn't have thought that the batteries would have shorted until much later.

Unless the batteries are under the floor.........and that would mean the boat could have been designed by the offspring of the dimwit who designed the TITANIC.

I think it is pretty common to forget bungs I have in a tinnie just ended up with embarrassment at the ramp.

I saw a bloke today try to launch his boat with the outboard bracket attached and a couple of months ago another one launched his boat with the flushing muffs on.

Boat ramps are entertaining when the weather is good.

Im sure the skipper will never leave the bungs out ever again. You know how I know. I've done it myself.

Yep thats right. 6 days after I got my first boat, and on the third outing, I forgot to put the bungs in. Was in the Noosa river and had been fishing for at least 3 hours, b4 I noticed water coming up from under the floor, and imediatley knew what I had done. Now as many people in this thread have suggested, I thought the best option (after switching on the bilge pump) was to try and gun it to the ramp, with the theory that more water cant come in while im moving forward. In reality this doesnt work. As soon as I hit the throttle, all the water in the boat obviously moved to the back, and it was impossible to get on the plane, in fact the outboard was quickly disappearing under water, and I thought I was gunna sink the boat right there. I got off the throttle and eased it straight the the bank. At that point I was a little panicky and hadnt even thought I plug the bung holes, untill I phoned my old man for advice. After plugging the bung holes with a hat, it took about 15 mins for the bilge pump to pump out the water. Then I cruised back to the ramp no probs.

More money then sense? I dont think so. Im not rich, and consider I have as much or more common sense as the average person. Maybe it was just lack of experience. Something we all had at one stage. And ya know what.... I check the bungs 3 times b4 every trip now!

Guilty done it too, but now I have the bilge pump and have never left the bungs out ever again. The other reason why I never leave the bungs out, is my son and I go through a verbal confirmation from bow to stern before we launch and between the two of us we have never had a mishap.

Thankfully my mantra at the ramp has never let me down in terms of bungs. Although I would hate to have it happen. In my seafarer 2 bungs lead to the sealed tanks running down each side of the boat that cannot be pumped out - they are sealed and there is no pump access. The other 2 inside bungs go inside the boat and are near the keel would allow water in where the bilge pumps are located - in the bilge:) - and from there under the centre of the floor under the fuel tanks - if the bung was open up in the v birth floor it would eventually bubble up through that also. But I always have that closed unless draining out the v-birth (does not often happen). If the 2 inside ones were left open the auto bilge would start kicking it out and I would hear it and could then reach down and block up the holes with something like a rag, but if the outside ones were out I couldnt do that (I could get into the drink and block though, but for the water inside I couldnt do anything - unless I had a set of those rubber billows type bungs - which I dont - where you accelerate and they discharge water and dont let it back in - not a bad idea for an emergency I guess!).

I wonder though how much my flotation tanks hold and whether having them full would sink the old girl - I doubt it but I wouldnt like to try!

Cheers

Nobody wanted to pick up the bucket & bail because everyone knows you get sweaty & then the tanning oil will wash off & then you have to fix your beach towel & "oh look at the nice boats coming to say hi, why is the back of the boat underwater ?????"
