My grand kids have outgrown the vest type PFD1'S after about 3 trips each.
So I go to the marine centre to buy some newies. I enquired about the gas operated type as used in the fishing comps. The person behind the counter tells me that the government department are considering bringing in an annual safety check requirement/test on these type of PFD1'S for recreational use. She also said the safety check is already in place for commercial operators. This would have a bearing on what type I will buy. She also pointed out that retailers would be reluctant to stock them due to their in-built shelf life. If the jacket was 3 months old, the purchaser would want a discount. Can anybody enlighten me on this issue?
Regards and Happy Easter ;D Chappy

Here is a link to MSQ that has some frequently asked questions about life jackets, and yes there is a servicing requirement mentioned for inflatables. It mentions that a service is to be done in accordance with the manufacturers requirements? or annually.

Hope this helps.

It's a cost of having kids safely on the boat. Kids and inflatable jackets don't go together as if the kid falls overboard they can still sink. Auto inflate ones are OK but dependant on a very small part for reliability and you must conmsider if you will maintain it every year. I know the other cheap ones are uncomfortable and a little bulky but they work.

We have any kids wearing a PDF 2 whenever they are on the boat as they are comfortable for them. We understand that if they hit there head or get scared they may still drown as it doesn't 100% get them floating head and face up but that is out compromise for comfort. All have a crotch strap fitted so they can't accidently slip out. We have the PDF 1 on the boat also and if it gets rough they get put in them.

There is some better brand and more expensive PDF1 that have a better fit and are much better designed for movement by kids and have more adjustments as they grow a bit. Damm kids grow fast but the other jackets they grow out of will always get used when they invite a friend out etc etc.

Thanks to both of you.

After careful consideration, the government info, and your comments,I will buy the grandies new standard type (zippered vest type ) PFD 1'S. YES, PERSONAL SAFETY BEFORE COMFORT.

I just thought they would be more likely to keep them properly fastened rather than the more bulky vests. But captains standing orders must prevail. I must admit, they are extremely well behaved in the boat.

Thanks to all
