I'm after a small outboard for my inflatable kayak. Must be good condition and reliable. Short shaft.

Anything considered - old or new.

G'day mate!

Just a related point. Don't be tempted to get a Choanloada Chinese outboard from e-bay. They are only $2-300 new but are completely useless IMHO.

Bought one a few months ago and it failed on the second runout, having only run at max revs on the first.

Got my money back but it cost me $120 in postage.

Regards, Rob.

Thanks for that Rob. I had saw them on ebay and had considered it. Will stay away now. I'm considering forking out for a new Tohatsu or Mercury but its a bit much to spend given I already have a real boat to go fishing in, which I don't use enough already.

I don't see an outboard bracket on your Kayak there joeT, how does it attach?

I have a 2 hp Honda (short shaft) that I don't need. In very good condition and has done only light work on the back of a Zodiac to run around canals.

Not a great pic, but you can buy outboard brackets for these kayaks, which I'll get when I get an outboard.

PM sent.

Check out a parsun outboard www. parsunoutboards.com.au They are built well and a great price. There is a video clip on a couple of them at the bottom of the pages.

Hmmm,

interesting motors, thanks for the web address mr_boats. Only a one year warranty but the prices are way down there in comparison to the established brands.

As far as I can tell most of their range are actually Yamaha motors, except for the small 2 strokes that appear to be Tohatsus.

Cheers

Hi again

The smaller engines were originally based on a yamaha desgin but they are now changing them to suit consumer needs. For example the 2.5hp they have changed the design so the throttle is on the tiller arm not on the front of the motor. They also have a nuetral and forward gearbox and the fuel tap for the tank is mounted on the front instead of the back of the motor. There is no other 2.5hp on the market with these features so they are now going away from the Yam design by tweaking with little convient additions. I've actually investiagated these engines alot and hoping they will bring down the price of other brands to keep them honest a bit more.
As for only a 1 year warranty on a $590 motor its still a pretty good deal.

Why not look at a little electric motor Joe?

Check with your Kayak manufacturer that the glue and material are Petrol proof. Many brackets are only designed for small electrics and a small thrust will move you to boat speed and give good range. Have a look at sevlor electric and work out what thrust they suggest. Noise of a petrol will drive you nuts and limit it's fishing use when you want it quiet up a creek

Hi JT

I fitted a 2.3 HP on an inflatable Seyvelor (sp) with the add on bracket and the outboard pushed it OK but the wind under the thing; when you were not in it, was enough to lift the bow and attempt to drown the motor.

Tried it once, saw the motor start to head into the drink, got to it in time and never tried it again. Got a 12 tinny tender now which the 2.3 gets on the plane with me in it (bl**dy Amazing) and the inflatable's back in it bag wondering if it will ever see daylight again. Maybe in the pool!

Anyhow if you do go on with this, at a minimum, fit waterwings to your motor is all I would suggest. Maybe better still borrow a motor first to see how it goes!

Cheers

PS Old Evinrude Johnson etc (not ETEC) and an number of others all came out of the same place in Japan except for the fuel tank / cowl and are around 2nd hand for 100 to 150 and seem pretty effective cf to the more expensive late mod 4s.

Sorry mines not available at this time but I'd probably part with the inflatable.
